Here are all the most exciting new restaurants and bars to grace the island this month
We are nearly at the halfway point of the year, and the dining scene shows no sign of slowing down. This May’s crop of new restaurants and bars are some of the most interesting concepts to appear on our shores, and we can’t wait to dive into some of these new gems.
Sushi Ryujiro, for one, is yet another Michelin-starred import from Japan, serving up pristine sushi. But for the fine-casual crowd, there are modern European concept Nook and Toma by the River, as well as Tapasu Oyster Gastro Bar, which should please the palate with its selection of Japanese oysters. For pizza aficionados, Il Clay joins a recent spate of pizzerias on the island (not that we’re complaining); also dedicated to classic cuisine is La Table d’Emma, which serves up homely Alsatian fare. Elsewhere, Fi Woodfire Thai is set to add a smoky twist to the Thai food scene here, while Bites & Brews, Shanghai’s latest export, should be the next brunch hotspot in Joo Chiat.
For imbibers, Ume Maru is a manga- and anime-themed whisky and cocktail bar that should make for fun exploring. But for creative cocktails in a seductive setting, head down to Higher Ground instead, where you can get a perfect view of the city skyline.

1. Sushi Ryujiro
This one-Michelin-starred Tokyo restaurant officially opened on April 29 under the Les Amis Group, presenting Singaporean diners with its refined sushi. Owned by chef Ryujiro Nakamura and helmed by head chef Naruki Ikeda, Sushi Ryujiro prides itself on the quality of its seafood, most of all its tuna, which is sourced from one of the top tuna dealers in Tokyo’s Toyosu market, Yamayuki. Though you can expect some signatures from the Tokyo flagship such as the kappa maki, be prepared for an exploration into new yet time-honoured territory.
