The artist had to juggle music and school. She was kicked out of a conservative all-girls high school for "a combination of bad grades and behaviour". She also had a hard time going to a school where there weren't many Filipino girls.

She struggled with her identity in the past. "I was in a [predominantly white school and for some reason, I just wanted to look whiter, and Asian beauty standards are just this weird thing where they want everyone to look paler, [but] I stopped wearing it completely. . .and I'm so much more comfortable as myself," reveals Beabadoobee.

"I made this crazy poster of Beatopia, and what was in it [were] the monsters, fairies. . .I even created an alphabet," she shares in an interview with Dazed. Now, the world she had made up has come to life as she released her album Beatopia last year which features songs about her admiration for bands, her brother Elijah, and love.
