It goes without saying that Italians have a clear understanding of what good design is. Whether the subject is fashion, furniture, or automobiles, quality design and excellent craftsmanship is always the highlight, resulting to a seamless blend of form and function.

A sense of heritage

In 1950, the Dini family re-opened the Maglificio Daco mill in Varese. Originally opened in 1921, the mill produced top-quality knitwear. All production processes—from the production of the yarn to the making of the boxes—happened in-house. Partnerships with luxury labels such as Christian Dior and Balenciaga ensured a wide reach for the garments.

The brand began developing in the 1970s, when a sail from an 18th-century clipper that read “Paul&Shark” caught Paolo Dini’s eye. That, as well as the mill itself, was what led him to launch the Paul & Shark brand in 1975. The first few collections featured sports fashion, taking inspiration from the spirit of adventure of the sailing world. An elegant touch was added to the designs, making them appropriate for street wear. The brand later grew to produce smart casual and luxury lines, as well as womenswear and children’s wear collections, always staying true to its goal of merging the practical with the sophisticated. To date, the COP918 pullover remains to be one of its most iconic creations.

The spring/summer 2017 men’s collection is a showcase of technique and colour, featuring pieces appropriate for both recreational and professional use. The men’s collection offers a variety of polo shirts and tees in solids, stripes, and florals. The button-downs and knit pullovers are perfect for days at the office, while the light jackets and hoodies are ideal for keeping warm. Shoes, bags, and caps round up the collection.

The women’s collection is an excellent source for new style staples as well. It is populated by whites, blues, red, and yellows, with tops, bottoms, and outerwear in solids and stripes. Pieces can be coordinated to create different looks that exude an easygoing yet elegant feel.

Design with a purpose

Leather goods company Piquadro was founded in 1987 by Marco Palmieri, who had been a 22-year-old engineering student at the time. It started out as a company that produced pieces for Italian luxury leather companies, and was later launched as its own entity, distinguishing itself as the go-to brand for functional, professional leather products best suited for travel. The first boutique opened in the year 2000 in Milan, with others following in Paris, London, and New York. Innovation and functionality are key elements to Piquadro’s design philosophy. Design sensitivity and technique go hand-in-hand to produce its products, ensuring each piece is an expression of true Italian elegance. Each aspect—down to the smallest detail—is the result of intensive research. Piquadro is always on the lookout for new design cues, often collaborating with the top design schools in Italy. All products are engineered for business, perfectly suitable to the sophisticated individual who is always on the go.

The brand’s spring/summer 2017 offerings range from computer backpacks to iPad cases, body bags to wallets, and key holders to cord pouches. Customers in search of classic looks may turn to the items that come in black, tan, or navy, while those seeking eye-catching pops of colour may look to the striking cobalt blues and reds.
