Singaporean institution Hawker Chan brings its signature soy sauce chicken to Manila’s dining public

It’s a dish that is deceptively simple at first glance: roast chicken done the oriental way with a burnished skin outside and succulent meat within.

But, in the hands of the man who has become one of Singapore’s living culinary legends, it becomes a luscious treat that has had diners queueing up for a taste for nearly two decades. Indeed, from its humble beginnings as a hawker centre stall, Hawker Chan has become a dining destination in its own right, drawing in locals and tourists alike with its simple but delectable menu.

Now, it is no longer necessary to fly all the way to Singapore to enjoy a plate of soy chicken rice or oriental barbecued pork: Hawker Chan has finally opened a store in the Philippines. “We’ve seen how Filipinos try to visit top-rated restaurants whenever they travel, so we thought, ‘Why not bring these restaurants into the country?’”

Rikki Dee, FOODEE Global Concepts CEO, explains. “Since Pinoys love to visit Hawker Chan in Singapore, we thought we’d bring it here and offer the same combination of great food and affordable luxury.” Since Malaysian-born Chan Hong Meng opened his first chicken rice stall at Singapore’s Chinatown Complex in 2009, his simple but delectable takes on classic soy sauce chicken and char siew served with either rice or noodles have become great favourites with diners who are willing to line up for hours on end just to taste his food.

The 86-seater restaurant on the ground floor of the Entertainment Mall of the SM Mall of Asia Complex will offer Hawker Chan’s signature combination platter with char siew, roast pork, and pork rib, as well as the classic whole chicken platter. Likewise, set meals with either rice, thin noodles, or ho fan, will only set diners back Php 100.00 to 150.00 – definitely proof that great flavours don’t have to cost too great a price.

Those dining at Hawker Chan are in for yet another treat until 5 August, as two lucky customers will get to fly to Singapore for a 3-day/2-night all expenses paid trip courtesy of FOODEE Global Concepts and the Singapore Tourism Board.
