Eat your way through the most populous city of Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, commonly also known as Saigon, is a vibrant city in Southeast Vietnam. While known for its French colonial architecture and historic landmarks, it is also characterised by its street food and café culture.

I visited Vietnam for the very first time this September, and spent an enchanting three days and two nights sipping Vietnamese coffee, chomping on banh mi and spring rolls, and slurping pho. Here are my recommendations for a memorable day in Ho Chi Minh City.

Start your day at The Workshop Coffee

Hidden on the second floor of a 100-year-old block of buildings is The Workshop Coffee, one of Vietnam’s first speciality coffee shops. Climb up a rustic, old staircase in a narrow alley to find the space characterised by exposed brick walls and a well-lit interior.

Large windows with adjacent seating allow for people-watching while enjoying an array of brunch plates, sandwiches, and pasta. But of course, the main affair is the coffee. Choose from changing selections of local and international beans brewed into your coffee of choice.

For an authentic Vietnamese meal, visit Cuc Gach Quan for home-style, traditional sharing plates. Surrounded by a tranquil koi pond and a well-groomed garden, the wood-clad, cosy space boasts a menu based around vegetables and fresh produce. Try the zucchini flower, home-made tofu with lemongrass, and claypot pork for a satisfying meal.

Slurp on a bowl of pho at Pho Hoa Pasteur

A trip to Ho Chi Minh City is incomplete without a warming bowl of pho. Open since 1968, Pho Hoa Pasteur’s toppings include beef brisket, tendon, tripe, flank, and meatballs, best paired with its selection of side dishes.

Fuel up on caffeine at Rang Rang Coffee and Dabao Concept

Ho Chi Minh City is not short on its assortment of cafés, one such spot being Rang Rang Coffee, housed in a modern, industrial space. Try the Vietnamese coffee, brewed in a variety of styles.

Dabao Concept is another rustic cafe tucked away in a quiet alley. Traditional Vietnamese architecture contrasts with the minimalist interior, where guests often read a book or sip a cup of coffee.

Maison Marou is famed for its local artisan chocolates, sourced from six provinces in Southern Vietnam. The chocolate bars make great souvenirs, but if you have time, sit down to try some of its pastries or chocolate-based drinks.

Trust me, try Pizza 4P’s

I know what you’re thinking—why would I visit Ho Chi Minh City for a slice of pizza? Well, this might just be the exception. The name of the Japanese Italian pizzeria is meant to read “pizza for peace”, and its most famed flavour is the cheese-based pie. Choose from the three, four, or five cheese pizza, best enjoyed with a generous drizzle of honey served on every table. Try the Bo Kho (Vietnamese beef stew) pizza for a local option.

End your night at The Pi

Female-owned neighbourhood bar The Pi is named after the endless mathematical concept, signifying the establishment’s never ending journey of growth. Founder Chun Chun exudes enthusiasm and warmth, ensuring all guests feel at home. Try The Bakery, made with cold brew black tea, toffee, vermouth, and whisky.
