The 14 new entries bring the total to 45 food establishments that have earned this recognition

Only a few days away from revealing its full restaurant selection, Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang have unveiled its additions for the 2024 year to the Bib Gourmand list. This list recognises restaurants and street food eateries that Michelin inspectors have deemed to provide excellent dining experiences at reasonable prices.

This year’s list sees five new entries from Kuala Lumpur, including Bangsar’s Sri Nirwana Maju that moved up from the Michelin Selected list, and nine new entries up north in Penang. “These newly recognised eateries enrich the local culinary landscape, showcasing the vibrant food scenes in both regions,” shares Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides.

These eateries are among the country’s most” value for money”, falling between the $ and $$ price range by Michelin’s standards, described as the” on a budget” or” moderate spend” categories. The Bib Gourmand recognition is symbolised by the “Bibendum” or “Michelin Man”, which diners can spot at the entrances or by the signages of these eateries.

In Kuala Lumpur, the five new additions to the list cover several cuisines. Hakka food specialist Hor Poh Cuisine is known for its poh lui cha and Hor Poh dumplings. Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice has also been awarded a Bib Gourmand for its flavourful chicken rice cooked in claypots, complete with the Malaysian version of socarrat and Chinese sausages.

Northern Indian restaurant Roti by d’Tandoor also makes the list, alongside legacy Cantonese restaurant Sek Yuen, which has been operating since 1948. Most notable, perhaps, is banana leaf rice institution Sri Nirwana Maju’s promotion to Bib Gourmand status, a level up from its previous Michelin Selected recognition.

Over in Penang, the eight eateries all specialise in street food, which is exactly what the state is known for. Family-run Ah Boy Koay Teow Th’ng is known for its clear chicken and pork-based kuey teow th’ng, whereas Ghee Lian specialises in three specific noodles dishes, including its signature green tom yum. Known for its appam balik since 1962, BM Cathay Pancake also joins the list.

Representing char kuey teow on the list are Penang Road Famous Jin Kor Char Kuey Teow and Siam Road Char Kuey Teow, both of which draw crowds of locals and tourists alike for its irresistible wok hei. On the soup noodles front, Hot Bowl White Curry Mee is known for its punchy coconut-based curry mee broth, while My Own Café is favoured for its Nyonya assam laksa.

Finally, Sister Yao’s Char Koay Kak, run by three sisters who inherited the stall from their father, has been popular for its char koay kak, or Teowchew fried rice cakes, since 1963.
