Amidst the monsoon rains, take shelter in this cosy Japanese restaurant in the heart of BGC.

Keizo is a direct contrast to the multitude of larger, higher-end neighbour restaurants around Burgos Circle. The Japanese restaurant has been in existence for almost ten years, first guided by Chef Yasuda who studied French cuisine and had one Michelin star under his belt before his retirement, and now by Chef Yo-chan, who took over. According to Keizo’s owner, Keiyo Muto, Chef Yo-Chan brought with him the idea that warmth and comfort will always bring the regulars back and create new ones. It goes without saying that the menu must list dishes that are familiar to everyone who has eaten Japanese. Keizo goes above and beyond on delivering that promise.

Walking through the front door, one can expect to hear the staff greet regular diners by their name and lead you to table. Being a small 28-seater restaurant with only one floor’s worth of space, each square foot has to be used for its maximum potential, which in this case is to be as welcoming and intimate as it can be. Soft lighting and soft music puts you immediately at ease. The left wall is framed with authentic, glass-framed Kumiko art that adds a homegrown slice of Japan to its aesthetic, while handmade paintings from Keiyo’s grandmother line the remainder of the walls, keeping it relaxed.

To complement the homey feel of Keizo, Chef Yo-chan’s modern, flexible menu has touch of comfort food that draws from his collective experience working in cafés across Japan in Tsukiji, Ginza, and Shibuya. The restaurant serves fresh house-blend matcha tea along with comfort food which, even though simple, is expertly made with fresh ingredients, and served with an in-house blend of soy sauce. The menu choices offer a wide array of sushi, sashimi, soba, donburi, and grilled dishes among many others — all typical of what you would find at another Japanese restaurant, but it’s food that is classic, yet vibrant.

Gyoza that is usually a dime a dozen and found in every other Japanese restaurant, gets a unique take; the airy and crispy shell hides a juicy filling mixed with a hint of ginger, giving it a refreshingly good taste. Sashimi is a famous staple fixture prepared from the freshest available ingredients every day.

Even something as common as fried rice, when prepared here, tastes more intricate than that of all others: a light yet savoury taste that stands on its own yet doesn’t overpower the accompanying side dishes. The wide selection of donburi includes the usual beef, pork, and chicken bowls, but also offers more unique bowls. The unidon was especially emblematic of this special dining experience: a basic concept, reinvigorated. Your basic rice bowl holds a fresh, creamy sea urchin that is sitting on top of a delicately tangy sushi rice, served with cool pink ginger to cleanse the palate between each bite.

Everything from the staff to the food and even the venue itself radiates ‘cosy’. The heavy sounds of rain from the outside becomes muffled, mixing in with the music playing overhead to create an ambiance of sanctuary. But it’s the little details that brings a glimpse of Japan to those who know it best. From the corner of the restaurant where you could see the chef and his cooks at work, to the genuine Japanese art decor on the wall, all of it comes from a place of authenticity — a literal slice of Japan condensed into an intimate dining experience.

Simple and authentic —yet special and refreshing— this is Keizo’s guiding principle. If you ever find yourself around BGC and end up in Burgos Circle, look for this hole-in-the wall; it's a cozy slice of Japan waiting to warm you up and make you come back again, and again.
