Virtuoso Raul Sunico enchants at an intimate concert in Margaux’s Château Siran

Across cultures and histories, the captivating couple that is wine and music has figured in many a great romance and grand celebration. Dionysus might as well have been present, then, at the Bordeaux home of Philippines’ Honorary Consul Edouard Miailhe and his wife Sevrine, when the marriage of these two pleasures in life—precisely that of wine and music— was commemorated with the concert of the internationally renowned and multi-awarded Filipino pianist, Dr Raul Sunico.

The enchanting setting was not only on the grounds of the historic Château Siran— one of the oldest family-owned properties in Margaux, from which the eponymous blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit-Verdot, and Cabernet Franc holds the distinction of being one of nine Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels in 2003—but even more specially in the Collections Cellar, a room filled with over 300 wine artefacts acquired by the consul’s parents throughout the Cold War.

It was here, amidst art and wine-related objects from 300 B.C. to the 19th century, that guests were ushered into seats with a glass of Saint-Jacques de Siran before the maestro performed an hour’s worth of classic, Filipino, and jazz piano interpretations.

An eclectic mix of pieces ranging from Playera (Granados), La Plus Que Lente (Debussy), and Polinaise in Ab, op. 53 (Chopin) to Themes
from Somewhere in Time (Barry/ Rachmanino/ arr. Sunico), Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin), and Saranggola ni Pepe (Gallardo/arr. Sunico) concluded with a standing ovation.

The guest list—made up of diplomats and several friends from the wine industry—was clearly comprised of culture and music lovers.

Amongst the savant company were HC Francois de la Giroday, head of the diplomatic corps in Bordeaux; Christina Garcia Rola, Philippines’ Consul to Paris; Nathalie Schyler, head of Musique au Coeur du Medoc; architect Fabien Mazenc; museum director Sophie Barthelemy; and neighbouring château owners: Château de Cazenove’s Louis de Cazenove, Château Ferran’s Philippe et Ghislaine Lacoste, Domaine de I’lle Margaux’s Pierre Favarel, and Château Ducru Beaucaillou’s Nicole Borie.

The gathering featured a festive exchange of cultures. Edouard, whose great grandmother was born in Manila, has kept the linkage between his native France and the Philippines alive throughout his endeavours, yet enriching the ties that bind the two together with such a delightful affair. It’s a common hope that this is not the last.
