The Singaporean and Vietnamese companies have signed a memo of understanding to embark on this endeavour together
Shiok Meats, co-founded by Singaporean Gen.T honouree Ling Ka Yi, has partnered with Minh Phu Seafood in Vietnam to develop a joint research and development facility to help bring cultivated seafood to Asia.
Shiok Meats, which launched in 2018, debuted the world’s first cultivated lobster meat in 2020, while Minh Phu Seafood is Vietnam’s biggest shrimp (conventional, not cultivated) producer.
Cultivated meat, also known as cell-cultured meat, is real animal meat grown from animal cells, thus eliminating the need to slaughter animals for their meat. Singapore is currently the only country in the world to approve cultivated meat for sale and consumption.

The R&D facility will be based in Vietnam and the companies say this will pave the path for conventional meat producers to broaden their product lines and diversify their portfolios with meat alternatives.
The companies also said they will experiment with cultivated shrimp, which will align with Minh Phu Seafood’s vision for incorporating trailblazing technologies in Vietnam’s seafood industry.
This facility will be the third of its kind for Shiok, which also has R&D facilities in Thailand and Australia.
