Proudly Scandinavian with an international outlook and marked by a depth of craftsmanship, here are seven brands that dwell at the intersection of Nordic heritage with contemporary innovation.

1. Norr11

Founded in 2011, Norr11 is a Copenhagen-headquartered design company that embraces curiosity and challenges conventional thinking. They create pieces that strike a balance between form, function, and comfort, blurring the lines between different time periods, design influences, and trends.

Led by founder Tommy Hyldahl and designer Kristian Sofus Hansen, their in-house studio focuses on aesthetics, functionality, and a desire to spark curiosity. Norr11's latest offerings include the captivating Jagger sofa, a contemporary take on iconic ’70s furniture design and sunken lounge interiors. With its sinuous form and limitless modular combinations, it transforms any space into a dreamy and fluid environment. 2. Handvärk

Danish brand Handvärk has spent a decade creating modern, minimalist furniture inspired by the Bauhaus period. Their designs prioritise both aesthetics and functionality, following the principle that a piece should be visually pleasing and serve its purpose effectively. They focus on simplicity throughout their company, from material sourcing to the design process.

Inspired by the modularity of Lego, Handvärk offers high-end quality at reasonable prices by repurposing materials. Their products are minimalist yet visually intriguing, achieving a balance between form and function.

Notable items include the Modular Sofa, combining Italian grandeur with Scandinavian minimalism. The Phantom Shelving System provides versatile storage with its customisable design, featuring makeshift shelves and buildable ladders.

3. Audo

This June, two Danish brands, Menu and by Lassen, have merged and will be known henceforth known as Audo Copenhagen. Bringing together beloved icons of furniture, lighting, and accessory design under one roof, Audo Copenhagen finds its operational and creative headquarters at Menu's showroom and hub, The Audo.

Reflecting the brand's core values of community, collaboration, and soft minimalist, Audo Copenhagen's launch will be accompanied by the opening of the immersive Audo Concept Shop, curated by Christian Møller Andersen, and Audo Cafe. Both showcase classic and contemporary design in inspiring settings,

Additionally, the Audo House penthouse will host a captivating sculpture created by Colin King and floral artist Alex Crowder, celebrating the beauty of the often-overlooked Phragmites Australis plant.

4. FDB Møbler

Founded in Albertslund, Denmark as an act of rebellion in 1942, FDB Møbler aims to design beautiful and functional furniture accessible to all. Their designs challenged the heavy and uncomfortable furniture prevalent at the time, prioritising everyday living.

Over the years, FDB Møbler has collaborated with various architects and furniture designers, each bringing their unique stories and perspectives.

Now, they proudly introduce a new collaboration with File Under Pop. Together, they have revitalized the renowned J46 chair by dressing it in four carefully selected colours from File Under Pop's inspiring palette.

This partnership breathes new life into the iconic classic, combining FDB Møbler's commitment to accessible design with File Under Pop's creative vision.

5. Fredericia

Fredericia, a Danish family-owned design company established in 1911, is renowned for creating modern originals that stand the test of time.

Their collaboration with internationally recognised designer Cecilie Manz has resulted in the Niveau family of small tables. These elegant and versatile coffee tables feature sophisticated marble and sensuous wood, seamlessly blending Scandinavian design principles with luxurious aesthetics.

In addition, Fredericia introduces the Gomo Collection, a lounge collection designed in collaboration with Copenhagen-based designer Hugo Passos, who hails from Portugal.

The Gomo Collection boasts upholstered pieces with light and curvaceous contours, exuding elegance in any setting.

Northern is a design brand that emerged from the studios of Northern Lighting, known for illuminating lives for over a decade. Their approach combines beauty and functionality, embracing natural materials and genuine craftsmanship. Expanding beyond lighting, Northern's debut collection features streamlined furniture and interior accessories that can be easily combined and contrasted. With smoked wood, twilight colours, and strong silhouettes, their designs create subdued and elegant moods while incorporating subtle geometries and classic sensibilities. 

Northern's creative vision extends beyond Norwegian heritage to meet the demand for laid-back luxury and cutting-edge cool. Recently launched products include the Brim Vase, featuring soft, light-coloured earthenware clay and an organic shape by Norwegian designer Ann Kristin Einarsen, and the Loud Cabinet by Färg & Blanche, characterised by a smooth curving silhouette and finely tailored details.
