Some car manufacturers offer so many special editions of their regular models it can be hard to remember what a standard model actually looks like at times. On the other side are the manufacturers such as BMW who are not at all known for their special edition models. After all, the BMW range is so expansive that it would probably only complicate things further if it was regularly offering limited or special editions as well as its lineup of standard models. That's why it's such a big deal that the German auto giant has announced a special edition of the M2, the Edition Black Shadow.

Despite having a name that sounds like a 1990s action TV show or a superhero, there's a lot to like about this new version of the performance-oriented M2. The reason for producing this special version of the M2 appears to be to celebrate the ongoing sales success of what has proved to be the most popular model in BMW's M lineup to date. The M2 sold more than 12,000 units globally throughout 2017, which is impressive for a top-of-the-range model in its first year of production.

The BMW coupe gets a sinister and dramatic look in its Edition Black Shadow guise with 19-inch, black matte forged light alloy wheels; carbon side mirrors; carbon trimmed rear diffuser, black chromed dual exhaust tips; and a high-gloss black finish on the dual-kidney grille. And of course, the only color the car comes in is Sapphire Black Metallic.

There are no performance upgrades to speak of, but that's not a problem as the M2 already boasts a 370 horsepower, turbocharged straight-six under the hood that works with the rear-wheel drive setup and optional seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to get the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds.

The car goes on sale in April, although it's not entirely clear yet which markets BMW will sell the M2 Edition Black Shadow in.
