The blockbuster fashion exhibition "Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams" has broken records at the V&A Museum.

The London venue has announced that the show, which was open to the public from February 2 through September 1 this year, attracted an impressive 594,994 visitors in total during its run. The figure sees it overtake another major fashion exhibition -- the 2015 "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" show -- to claim the title.

The exhibition -- the largest in the UK focusing on the legendary House of Dior -- traced the history and impact of the famous couturier Christian Dior and his creative successors at the house, namely Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri. It encompassed more than 500 objects spanning rare haute couture garments, accessories, jewellery, perfume, photography and illustrations, and highlights included a dress worn by Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday.

Tickets to the show sold out within weeks of its opening, and in March the V&A announced that it was extending its run through to September 1, as opposed to ending it on July 14 as originally planned.

"In 1947 Christian Dior changed the face of fashion, creating a lasting legacy that continues to inspire today," said Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A, in a statement. "The V&A has a history of staging revelatory fashion exhibitions, so we knew that Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams would be popular, but we have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal visitor response since it opened in February."
