YSL is more than a brand. It stands for the fascinating life and work of one of the most influential fashion designers in history. Yves Saint Laurent revolutionised fashion by combining colours, shapes, and patterns from all over the world—resulting to unique haute couture collections. And in his travels, he came across the Jardin Majorelle in Morocco and fell in love with the work of art before him.

This connection between the designer and the city is the reason why the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech has been built. Managed by the Fondation Pierre Bergé, the museum stands along the Rue Yves Saint Laurent, next to Jardin Majorelle.

The French Studio KO, founded by Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty, is responsible for the design and conception of the building in Marrakech. The aim for the architecture of the building is to echo the fashion exhibited inside. It is inspired by one of Saint Laurent's most famous designs – the tuxedo collection for women. The velvety smooth terracotta bricks are arranged in a tight lattice pattern, creating an almost fabric-like pattern.

The floor space spans 4,000 square metres, 400 of which will be dedicated to a permanent exhibition about Yves Saint Laurent. This comprises of some 5,000 items of clothing, 15,000 haute-couture accessories and tens of thousands of sketches. Another 150 square metres will be available for temporary exhibitions. In addition, the structure will include a large terrace, restaurant, and its own library containing some 5,000 book son fashion and design. Finally, the sanitary facilities will be furnished by Duravit, particularly the wall-mounted toilets from the Darling New series by sieger design. A harmonious circular form and delicate edges are the hallmark of this design classic within the Duravit programme.
