Get inspired by this group of people who love to live a healthy lifestyle

Getting into shape takes a whole lot of discipline and motivation. Despite how good it is for us, hitting the gym and exercising can often feel like such a chore. Most of us need some sort of big push to help us get on our way and that's OK. It is absolutely better to do a little than to do nothing at all!

We spoke to several of Philippine Tatler's friends who espouse a healthy lifestyle in order to find out what drives them to be active and healthy.

Hopefully these fitness and health nuts can serve as your fitspiration!

1. What made you fall in love with fitness?

Fitness has been integrated into my lifestyle for as long as I can remember - I adored gymnastics for many years when I was a child, entered swimming varsity and cheerleading in high school and finally got into running after college. Because working out and being fit was something I was used to at an early age, this was something I carried with me until present day.

2. What is your go-to workout and why?

I love running around the village during sunset. I crave for my alone time to unwind after a long day at work and right before heading home to spend time with my family. This is also when my creative juices work best.
I also equally love Core Kinesis which I've been doing for 7 years now. It really works well with my body and does the trick when it comes to toning and definition.

3. Advice for people who want to get fit and do not know where to start?

Find the right workout that works for you - what may be great for others may not be what you're looking for. I am personally not a fan of working out in a group or a big class. I prefer to have one on one sessions where I can really concentrate on the workout. It's important to be doing something you love so you don't feel like going to the gym is a chore.

4. Fitness or workout trend you want to try out?

It's definitely not a trend but I promised myself to start my ballroom dancing classes this month - I've always loved dancing and used to take lessons briefly when I was younger.

5. What do you do to stay healthy in terms of your diet?

My husband, Marco and I are pretty conscious health wise so we steer clear of gluten, fried and greasy things during the week but treat ourselves to what we please on weekends - everything in moderation.

1. What made you fall in love with fitness?

The feel-good feeling you get after a good workout. It's the best way to start my day. I love weight lifting, cross-fit, tennis, golf and running.

2. What is your go-to workout and why?

An hour in the gym and lifting heavy weights - it gives me a great pump and is a daily workout routine I can easily squeeze into my workday.

3. Advice for people who want to get fit and do not know where to start?

Fitness is a lifestyle. You have to be determined and wholehearted in your mindset. Fitness is not constrained to just what you do during your workouts, but also a part of your everyday life.

4. Fitness or workout trend you want to try out?

I recently joined the "Spartan Race" in Hong Kong, and am looking forward in participating in more of these, both locally and abroad.

5. What do you do to stay healthy in terms of your diet?

Nothing, really. Eat what you want, but balance and moderation is key.

1. What made you fall in love with fitness?

My love story with fitness was unexpected. In high school, I wasn't the typical athletic or sporty student.  My love story with fitness started in college when I decided to train for triathlons and it continued on from there. Training for triathlons taught me the importance of discipline and hard work. I decided to stop training for triathlons when I started working because I found it hard to sneak training into my schedule. I then fell in love with indoor cycling and resistance training which I easily alternate and fit into my current schedule. The main reason why I love fitness so much is the feeling of achievement and empowerment I get when I'm at the gym, studio or wherever I'm training. For me, there's nothing else like it!

2. What is your go-to workout and why?

My current go-to workouts are indoor cycling at Saddle Row, resistance training at Focus Athletics and now I'm exploring (and loving!) the world of Lagree Fitness!

3. Advice for people who want to get fit and do not know where to start?

You have to find something you love doing. You have to go out there and explore all the options that are available to you until you find what you love to do. There are so many great workouts to choose from now with all these new studios opening that offer varying types of workouts. But I also believe that getting fit shouldn't be constricted to the walls of a studio or gym. You can be active even just by walking your dog or going on hikes with your friends. Find what you love to do!

4. Fitness or workout trend you want to try out?

I would love to try Barry's Bootcamp which is a famous studio in the States.

5. What do you do to stay healthy in terms of your diet?

I've had GI issues for most of my life so taking a food intolerance test really helped me steer away from food that don't agree with my body. Now, I barely have the symptoms I used to have and I basically eat a dairy-free and wheat-free diet! I also try to cut down on my sugar since I have biggest sweet tooth!

4. Sara Black

1. What made you fall in love with fitness?

I had a cancer scare in 2013 which really shook me to my core. I made a conscious decision to take charge of my health and fitness is a necessary aspect to that!

2. What is your go-to workout and why?

I am totally in love with yoga it can be super intense and challenging or gentle and passive when you need it to be. Anyone can start it at any fitness level or age and it's totally portable, you can do it anywhere! Yoga means to "yoke" in Hindi, meaning to bring together the body and the mind - there are so many added benefits than just physical exercise, yoga also enhances mental, emotional and spiritual health.

3. Advice for people who want to get fit and do not know where to start?

Start today, start now. Even if it's just for 10 minutes. Then build yourself up slowly from there. And be steadfast in your vision of the healthiest, fittest, most well version of yourself. Because you deserve it. You deserve a life that is amazing.

4. Fitness or workout trend you want to try out?

I'll try out the Spartan Race in September - it's an obstacle course on steroids. Wading through mud and barbed wire, throwing spears at a target, jumping through fire, that kind of crazy thing. Trying new things helps me not get bored

5. What do you do to stay healthy in terms of your diet?

1) Stay away from junk food, processed food, anything with chemical additives I can't pronounce (try reading junk food labels!)
2) Limit sugar and saturated fat
3) Eat lots of clean food like organic veggies, free-range chicken and eggs, grassfed beef.
4. Drink lots of water!

1. What made you fall in love with fitness?

I did not initially get into fitness to become healthy physically, or to lose weight, or to tone up. I started off because it was one hour of my day of "mindless" me time. Where I didn't need to think too hard, make decisions, or sit in front of a computer, but I was still accomplishing something. It was an hour away from the hustle and bustle of life, where I could clear my head and just move.

2. What is your go-to workout and why?

My favourite workout is a muay thai session at the Philippine Army gym, under former National Team member Thairone Naticho. No frills, no air conditioning, no fancy equipment. Just bare feet, hard work, and sweat. I love muay thai because it is so technical. There is always room to learn and improve. I also love the sheer physicality of it. Muay thai is very cathartic. I balance this out with barre to lengthen out my muscles, and for cardio, I spin and chase after my kids.

3. Advice for people who want to get fit and do not know where to start?

Everyone starts from somewhere. I have always been athletic, growing up I played lacrosse and basketball. After my second pregnancy though, I was overweight, sluggish, and back to zero. All it takes is one day at a time. Be gentle with yourself, and listen to your body. Start with once a week. Then increase as you get more comfortable. Don't get intimidated by super toned, thin, flexible, fit people. They started from scratch too. But they put in the work, and you will have to as well.

4. Fitness or workout trend you want to try out?

I'm happy with my workouts now. There hasn't really been anything new that I want to try.

5. What do you do to stay healthy in terms of your diet?

I love food too much to restrict myself. So I don't diet and I eat what I want. I do workout 6 days a week though, so that's the trade-off.

1. What made you fall in love with fitness?

I was into sports at a very young age. I started horseback riding when I was 8 years old. As I was growing up, I had gained a lot of weight. I was around 140lbs at four foot 10 inches. So my mom enrolled me in a gym at 12 years old. And from then on, I haven't stopped working out.

2. What is your go-to workout and why?

My go-to workout is running because it burns a ton of calories in a minimum amount of time.

3. Advice for people who want to get fit and do not know where to start?

I'd tell them to just to get started. The fitness community is very welcoming to newcomers. So don't be shy and start today!

4. Fitness or workout trend you want to try out?

I'm not really into trends. I have been working out for the past 12 years now, so I know what works for me and I stick to it. It is good to try new things in order to mix up your routine but once you find what works for you, make it a part of your lifestyle.

5. What do you do to stay healthy in terms of your diet?

As for diet, it really depends on what my goals are. I had a different diet when I was powerlifting, bodybuilding, and when doing Triathlons. However when I'm off-season and not in training I just stick to following my Macros and making sure I get enough carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Balance is everything!
