For the first time in almost 100 years, a total solar eclipse is set to captivate the US by casting the continent into preternatural shadow. Airbnb and National Geographic are teaming up to bring a pair of lucky astronomy fans to experience something truly extraordinary: flying over the Pacific Ocean to catch the sight of the eclipse among the clouds.

The itinerary actually begins the day before the eclipse. You will be welcomed to a posh yet functional camping site near the world-renowned Smith Rock that’s composed of a custom geodesic dome and an observation deck equipped with a variety of telescopes for the expedition. Prepare for close encounters with wildlife, as you will be surrounded by the Oregon wilderness during your stay.

Hosting this expedition National Geographic Explorer and internationally recognized scholar is Dr. Jedidah Isler, who will join you for a lovely dinner under the stars and will openly discuss anything about the beauty of the universe. Also joining is National Geographic photographer and science journalist Babak Tafreshi, who will give some tips on how to best capture this unique event.

An early start the next day will bring you, Dr. Isler, and a small crew aboard a small private jet at Redmond Municipal Airport where you’ll take off and fly for two hours over the Pacific Ocean. When you take the Path of Totality, you’ll then witness the first moments of the eclipse while in the air.
