Find out how Paolo Bugayong, Angeline Tham, Cyndi Fernandez-Beltran, Paolo Villonco, and Mikhail Schemm deal with stressful situations.

We all face different kinds of stress, be it physical or emotional. Mental health is extremely important and has thankfully become more of a discussed topic as of late. With our schedules becoming increasingly hectic, it seems as if the calendar days are just zooming past us. During stressful, busy days (maybe even weeks) we often find ourselves forgetting to take a moment for ourselves, to take a deep breath or appreciate the little things or people around us.

We chat up 5 of our Generation T honourees to find out what stresses them out and how they deal with the challenges that they face:

What stresses you out?

Running a business and taking it from zero to something bigger is exciting and meaningful, but very stressful every day! Managing expectations, being responsible for a lot of people, and living in the midst of uncertainties keeps me alert and stressed... but then again, that’s life and I love my work!

How do you deal with stressful situations?

I often like to ask for advise from other entrepreneurs. It’s nice to pick other people’s brains to see the circumstance at hand from different perspectives. I then take a step back to assess the situation and decide how to tackle the task and try my best to do each step very well. That’s the quickest way out of a stressful situation! Make the right choices. A little prayer also is a big help!

How do you unwind?

I unwind with my family. Spending time with my beautiful wife and kids is just what I need after a stressful day. Pouring myself a scotch is another great way to end a big day!

Mikhail Schemm

Tatler Asia

Mikhail is the co-founder and managing director of CC:Concepts, co-founder of More Rice, and one of the music directors of XX XX. Learn more about him, here.

What stresses you out?

Work related stuff of course, especially when we have events coming up. The weeks and days leading up to the event are the most stressful. Outside of work it's a few other factors, especially when living in Manila—traffic for one, and also inefficient (and not useful) bureaucracy!

How do you deal with stressful situations?

I focus on always finding a solution to solve the problem to get out of that situation, rather than dwell on the issue itself.

How do you unwind?

I like to unwind by playing sports and being outdoors in nature of course! Reading helps me too, as it means not looking at a screen which is what many of us do all week! But the ultimate relaxation for me is floating in a sensory deprivation tank! It's like heavily induced meditation for 90 minutes. It is the most zen feeling I could ever describe.

Angeline Tham

Tatler Asia

Angeline is the found and CEO of Angkas. Learn more about her, here.

What stresses you out?

I get stressed out when there are too many things that are calling for my attention at the same time.

How do you deal with stressful situations?

I take a deep breath. I then analyse the problem and break it down. I prioritise actions that I can influence and then do those first. For the more complex issues or tasks at hand, I make more decisions for long term plans. By taking a big problem and breaking it down into parts, it helps me to keep moving forward, chipping away at one thing at a time.

How do you unwind?

Getting a massage or spending time outdoors in nature helps me reconnect, and unwind.

Cyndi Fernandez-Beltran

Tatler Asia

Cyndi is the co-founder and managing partner of Moss Manila. Learn more about her, here.

What stresses you out?

Certain situations where things go the opposite of how I had carefully planned things mostly because of factors outside of my control. Not having enough time to tick off everything that is on my to-do-list. Unrealistic expectations and deliverables.

How do you deal with stressful situations?

Compartmentalizing my thoughts so I can isolate and focus on resolving the root of a stressful situation from all the other challenges I am dealing with

How do you unwind?

I do spontaneous weekend travels with my family. I unplug, remove all the noise of staying connected digitally.

Paolo Villonco

Paolo is the co-founder and CEO of Ignition Venture Studio. Learn more about her, here.
