Among the fine examples of Philippine abstraction are two non-objective landscapes by Fernando Zobel – one of them, Hot Sun, Cool Fire, a 1972 oil on canvas, being of special significance it being inscribed in the artist’s elegant script with the lyrics to a song of the same name in English – a rarity in the artist’s body of work.
The verse which is taken from a poem of the same name and also known as ‘Bethsabe’s Song’ was written by the 17th century Elizabethan playwright George Peele for a play based on the Biblical story of King David’s affair with Bathsheba, the mother of the future King Solomon. The lyrics reflect the temptations of their affair and provoke sensations of passion and longing, breathing a new intensity to Zobel’s piece.
