Known for his monumental site-specific painted installations, internationally acclaimed artist Michael Lin visits Manila for a unique exhibition.

In his first solo presentation in the Philippines, Michael Lin spent few days in the country’s metropolis and had an interesting exchange with pedicab drivers. Being the country’s second most ubiquitous mode of transportation next to the jeepney, Lin was drawn to the pedicab and saw them as an emblem belonging to a homegrown subculture of folk art. Thus, he came up with the exhibition, Locomotion.

In conjunction with the Art Fair Philippines 2016, the Museum for Contemporary Art and Design in Manila will be enveloped with an uninterrupted floral arrangement using Lin’s signature decorative patterns based on traditional Taiwanese textiles. Lin is known for his interventions that redesign nd reconfigure public spaces, dynamically transforming the way they are perceived by the public.

In Locomotion, which will be opening  on February 18, the imagery adapts and flows on top, through, or in between the nooks and corners of the building, transitioning into different forms—from painting, to drawing, to print—unyielding by the structure’s unique characteristics and multi-textured surfaces. The exhibition features selected pedicabs adorned with the same pattern as the interior walls of the museum thereby metaphorically and physically extending the galleries out into the community and likewise bridging a specific component of our daily life inside the building.
