The event is part of the 52 Super Series, a demanding, annual circuit which this year comprises six events taking place in the USA and Mediterranean. The 2017 edition marks the first year of a partnership which positions Rolex as Official Timepiece of the 52 Super Series and title sponsor of the Worlds.

Rolex has 60 years of involvement in the sport of yachting, particularly with pedigree events that benchmark sailing proficiency and require exemplary management.

The performance-led nature of TP52 racing, in combination with the added excitement of a pinnacle event for the class, makes the partnership with Rolex a natural fit according to Agustin Zuleta, CEO of the 52 Super Series: “Rolex is a world-renowned, prestigious brand, synonymous with the very highest standards. We are very proud of our privileged new relationship.”

As well as being crowned World Champion, the winner of the 2017 Rolex TP52 Worlds will receive a Rolex timepiece, the recognized symbol of success and achievement in yachting, awarded to the winners of many of sailing’s most prestigious events, including the Rolex Fastnet Race, the Rolex Sydney Hobart and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

The TP52 World Championship was first raced in 2008 in Lanzarote, where it was won by Quantum Racing. The American team has since won the championship four times including last year’s event in Mahón, Menorca.

Despite this impressive track record, Ed Reynolds, President of Quantum Sails and Director of Quantum Racing, remains cautious: “It is going to be very difficult for us to repeat as World Champions. We have made crew changes in two of the most important positions on the boat. The guys that came in are great, but, you just can’t replace the best TP52 helmsman in the world [Ed Baird] or a guy like Sean Clarkson overnight. That said, we have every intention to defend our title, but it’s not going to be easy!”
