You’ve seen it in the cinemas and marvelled at the talents of Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried – should you even catch the live musical? Read on to find out if Mamma Mia! is actually worth the splurge

Entering The Theatre at Solaire, you can already feel the anticipation in the air – Mamma Mia! is familiar to anyone who’s seen the film – yet, I found myself still incredibly excited to see live musical. First staged in 1999 (written by Catherine Johnson), the musical features renditions of famous ABBA songs alongside original compositions by ABBA member, Benny Andersson.

The story is as quirky as the music that carries it through. Lead character, Sophie Sheridan, is about to be wed in an idyllic island in Greece where she was raised by her steadfast and eccentric mother, Donna. As the wedding draws closer, Sophie finds herself longing to be given away by her father whom she’s never met or known.

Having read her mother’s journal, she realises that she has three potential fathers – all of whom she invites to her wedding, in the hopes that whoever showed up would be the one to walk her down the aisle. Lo and behold, all three show up on the island – Sam, Bill, and Harry – all-eager to see their old flame, Donna.

The curtains rise and the audience is greeted with stunning vocals from Lucy May Barker (Sophie), followed by spectacular sequence after sequence. Well-rehearsed and exquisitely performed, the Mamma Mia! ensemble makes every scene as lively and engaging as it can be. Even set changes between scenes refuse to fall flat with well-choreographed prop transitions. However, not to be outdone is the captivating Shona White (Donna) – a number to note is her rendition of ‘The Winner Takes It All’ – effortless, seamlessly sewn into the narrative, and all in all, an incredible vocal showcase.

Bringing the entire performance to another level are Helen Anker (Tanya) and Nicki Swift (Rosie), the energetic duo behind Donna & The Dynamos. Both performers effortlessly make the audience laugh – from body work, dialogue delivery, and lyrical prowess – Anker and Swift transform Mamma Mia! into a full-bodied musical, comedic timing and acting chops in tow.

Not to be outwitted are the ‘dad-trio’, Daniel Crowder (Harry), Matthew Rutherford (Bill), and Tamlyn Henderson (Sam). Although they vie for Sophie’s attention in the play, they certainly capture the audience’s fancy equally. All three bring an extra dose of charm and playfulness to the tale, it becomes quite challenging to figure out who among them should walk Sophie down the aisle.

With creative scene variations and entertaining vocal arrangements, the musical is a testament to the skilfulness of both Director Phyllida Lloyd and Choreographer Anthony Van Laast. As the musical draws to a close, the crowd is treated to a concert by Donna & The Dynamos; practically everyone was on their feet jiving to ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Super Trouper’.
