Tanya Villanueva

Literally painted on several yards of cloth, these masterpieces have helped the artist channel the energy from various situations of the show’s development. To release the dead energy of the abandoned and damp places she used as her studio — which were a community playground, basketball court, and a patch of overgrown grass — she spontaneously stroked her brushes non-stop on yards of cloth.Yard Paintings includes her colourful rolled paintings and a short slide show of photos of these rolls in distressed forms, with slums as the background.

“Sometimes, its aversion to deadlines. Sometimes, I just really want the feeling of painting. For me, canvas paintings are stationary like, 'Huh? That’s it?'” Villanueva said. “I also rolled the paintings because it made its potential for other use to come out. When I was painting, I didn’t pre-conceive its shape. Everything just went into form after.”
