If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to throw a Bling Empire-worthy party, ponder no more—its Singaporean star Kane Lim spills the tea.
Kane Lim is known for many things. He’s one of the main—and most entertaining—cast members on Netflix’s hit reality TV show, Bling Empire; He’s an heir to a Singaporean family that is worth billions; and he’s one of the newest ambassadors for Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty.
But one thing that’s not talked about enough is the fabulous parties he regularly throws for his friends throughout the series, which are, more often than not, loaded with diamonds, truffles and drama.
“Ambience and creating the right vibe is so important," says Lim. "This includes everything from location, music and timing….I personally prefer dinner because everyone looks better in the dark.”
Tatler caught up with the star to talk about what makes a good host, and how parties have the power to bring people together and support budding businesses.
In Good Company
When it comes to hosting a party, the most important thing to consider, according to Lim, is the company. “My first rule is to have a diverse group [of guests],” he says matter-of-factly. “Not just people who have similar interests. It’s good to have people with differences, and who come from different backgrounds.”
Take, for example, a party Lim hosted in Season Three, which was attended by an eclectic crowd that included Grey’s Anatomy star Alex Landi, Grammy-nominated rapper Jeezy with his wife, TV host Jeannie Mai, and actor Lewis Tan – who caused a bit of a stir when he showed up to the party arm-in-arm with Bling Empire star, Kim Lee.
The party was hosted at upscale Los Angeles restaurant Crustacean, which Lim transformed into a museum-like exhibition space showcasing jewellery pieces by designer and entrepreneur, Jonathan Koon. “There were diamond encrusted hats and very cool, avant-garde bracelets… jewellery that’s really catered toward men,” Lim recalls.
Ever the aspiring businessman, Koon and Lim recently teamed up to create a streetwear brand called B.L.I.N.G., an acronym for ‘because life is never guaranteed’. To launch its debut collection, the pair hosted a party for 650 guests at upscale retailer Fred Segal’s West Hollywood flagship.
“Every piece that was bought tied into charities that my business partner and I support,” says Lim. One such charity was Golden Voice Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to education and giving back to the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community, founded by Bling Empire co-star Kelly Mi Li.
