To celebrate this entrepreneur and celebrity's birthday, we look back at some of her decisions over the years, from fashion choices to career moves, that broke the Internet

Whether you like her or not, there is no denying that Kim Kardashian is one of the most impactful figures in the fashion, beauty and entertainment industries. You also cannot dismiss that she and her family have established themselves as trendsetters and change makers who are capable of influencing the way people dress, do their make-up and even shop.

Having cemented herself firmly in the public eye, Kardashian now has the luxury to make moves both big and small—including boldly wearing a literal piece of history to dipping her toe into other industries. To celebrate this star’s 43rd birthday, we look at five times she wowed us ... for a variety of reasons.

1. Becoming a lawyer

Often dismissed as being someone who relies solely on her looks, Kardashian surprised her critics by shattering the one-dimensional characterisation of her as a selfie-obsessed celebrity, and began pursuing a career in law in 2021. While she didn’t drop everything to attend a law school, she passed the “baby bar” exam and is currently undergoing a four-year apprenticeship with non-profit organisation called #cut50.

If she succeeds, she will not be the first lawyer in her family—her father, Robert George Kardashian was an attorney and businessman. Further, this isn’t the first time the star has expressed an interest in law: the mum of four has been lobbying for prison reform in America since 2018, and advocated for clemency for a female prisoner on death row in 2022.

2. Wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress to the Met Gala

It’s one thing to emulate the late icon Marilyn Monroe, but for Kardashian to have worn her actual naked illusion dress—that she famously wore while singing Happy Birthday to US President John F Kennedy in 1962—to the 2022 Met Gala created another level of buzz.

She worked with the owners of the dress, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, to take care and preserve the garment during the five minutes she wore the dress on the red carpet before changing into a replica gown for the remainder of the evening, but she still caused a stir and attracted controversy for wearing an actual historical garment. Whatever your feelings about this decision of hers, there’s no doubt it created a memorable moment in contemporary fashion history.

3. Starting a private equity firm

Kardashian announced her latest venture in June this year: that she is expanding her empire into private equity.

She co-founder SKKY with Jay Sammons, a former partner at investment firm Carlyle Group, to focus on control and minority investments in high-growth, market-leading consumer and media companies. “Together we hope to leverage our complementary expertise to build the next generation consumer and media private equity firm,” Kardashian wrote on Twitter (sorry, X).

4. Taking on a lead acting role

While Kardashian is no stranger to reality television—having starred in Keeping Up with the Kardashians for the better part of her career—and having done cameos and voice overs on Ocean’s 8 (2018) and Paw Patrol: The Movie (2021), this year marks her first foray into a leading role in fictional series.

Kardashian joined the American Horror Story: Delicate cast as Siobhan, a celebrity publicist. And whether she’s based some of her character’s inspiration on her “mumager” Kris Jenner, or had picked up the tone and lingo from her own experiences in the industry, it looks like she is putting on a convincing show and having fun with it.

5. Establishing Skims as a major brand

When Kardashian launched her shapewear brand Skims in 2019, it was an instant success—with consumers wanting that Kim K body, its initial launch sold out in 10 minutes and generated US$2 million in profit. However, Skims isn’t just a shapewear brand, with a collection of undergarments, bodysuits and shapewear available in a range of shades to suit various skin tones and sizes from XXS to 5XL, Kardashian is making a statement about inclusivity and body positivity.

The brand has since been recognised as one of Time’s 100 most influential companies, and was valued at US$4 billion in July. Also, Skims collaborated with luxury brand Fendi on a capsule collection in 2021, and is the official underwear, loungewear and  pajamas for female athletes from Team USA and its athletes wore Skims at the 2020 Summer Games and Paralympics, and 2022 Winter Games.
