1. Like TikTok, Lemon8 has two main sections: Following and For You

The new app—which is touted as a cross between Instagram and Pinterest—provides users with an opportunity to share photos and short videos. Similar to its sister app TikTok, Lemon8 has two main sections: Following and For You. The former shows posts from your follower list while the latter allows you to scroll through posts that match your interests.

2. Lemon8 uses AI technology

Similar to TikTok, Lemon8 uses ByteDance’s AI technology to enhance its users’ experience while streamlining content discovery. This means that the app will provide various users with their own personalised recommendation feed.

3. The app places emphasis on localised and educational content

Posts on Lemon8 typically feature long text blocks, typically reviewing products or providing recommendations to various items. Most posts on the platform are also edited to provide informative labels and texts. Creators are also given caption templates by the app—such as ‘my favourite beauty products of the year’—to steer users to share more detailed and meaningful descriptions. Lemon8 Singapore’s official account has also uploaded multiple posts on writing detailed and educational captions.

4. It’s a competitor of popular Chinese app Xiaohongshu

Translated from Mandarin to English, Xiaohongshu means ‘little red book’ and it is a social networking and e-commerce market boasting over 300 million active users a month. Since Lemon8’s launch, the two apps have constantly been compared. Users of both apps have also highlighted that Lemon8’s photo-heavy layout and descriptive review posts largely resemble that of Xiaohongshu. That said, one of the main differences between the two apps is the language—Xiaohongshu is Chinese-centric while Lemon8 is not, making the latter more approachable in comparison.

5. The app is designed to be user-friendly while encouraging creativity

Lemon8 offers a range of in-app templates, filters, fonts and stickers, helping users create posts that fit their own style. This means that creators are able to quickly turn their simple photos into curated social media posts with tools within the app itself. Lemon8 also provides curators (also known as Zesties on the app) with a list of do’s and don’ts, with one suggestion being to not create “single and generic looking images”.
