When casting was announced for Our Beloved Summer, K-drama and Korean cinephiles rejoice to see the reunion of Parasite’s Choi Woo-shik and Itaewon Class’s Kim Da-mi. The two leads previously starred as enemies in the 2018 film, The Witch: Part 1 The Subversion. Now, they are trying their hands in a romantic comedy—now that’s a reunion worth seeing.

Our Beloved Summer also marks Choi’s return to the small screen not only after the mega-hit, Parasite but since 2017’s The Package and The Boy Next Door as well as a cameo appearance in Fight for My Way.

Similarly, this is also Kim’s return to Korean dramas after winning Best New Actress for Itaewon Class at the 2020 Baeksang Arts Awards. Her role in The Witch: Part 1 was her debut feature for which she won and was nominated for several acting awards.

In the drama, Choi is playing a building illustrator (Choi Woong) as an adult while Kim is a public relations expert (Kook Yeon-soo).

Kim Yoon-jin sits in the director’s chair for his first time helming a full-length drama. Previously, he only worked on the drama special, Hi Dorothy and served as a producer for popular K-drama, It’s Okay to Not be Okay. Joining him as screenwriter is also a newcomer, writer Lee Na-eun who worked on the K-drama, Falling in Love and the movie, Secret Crushes.

As relative newcomers to the small screen, it’ll be interesting to see how they will bring a fresh and youthful flavour to Our Beloved Summer.

Besides Choi and Kim, Kim Sung-cheol and Roh Jeong-eui complete the main cast. Since his debut in Prison Playbook, Kim Sung-cheol has wowed audiences and cemented himself as an actor to watch. Quickly gaining supporting roles after being a frequent scene-stealer, Kim has a presence on screen that can range from comedic, lovable to scary.

This time though, he’s playing as another second lead, Kim Ji-woong who’s a documentary director in charge of producing Choi and Kook’s documentary. But who knows, those with second lead syndrome might actually end up rooting from him.

Similarly, Roh Jeong-eui is also known for her range of supporting roles as early as 2011. The actress has starred in a variety of genres and it’s safe to say that Our Beloved Summer marks a new chapter in her career. Here, she takes on the role of a top idol, En Je-i who goes by the moniker, NJ.

Thanks to the heartwarming friendship between Choi and BTS’ V (members of the Wooga Squad), it’s not surprising that the baritone vocalist is leading the OST for Our Beloved Summer. The song, Christmas Tree instantly played on the first episode of the drama and will be released on December 24.

Previously V sang Sweet Night, one of the soundtracks for Itaewon Class, where Kim Da-mi also starred as well as V and Choi’s friend (and member of the Wooga Squad), Park Seo-joon.

The lyrics go, “It’s summer, I see you. You always come to me besides the lake. When the rain stops, you shine on me. Your light is the only thing that keeps the cold out” which fits perfectly with the story between Choi and Kim’s characters. BTS fans who have heard the song are already describing V as a hopeless romantic because of the lyrics.
