Iconic supermodels in the ’80s and ’90s on beauty in a digital age

In the past, models had to earn their stripes at fashion luncheon shows, which were more refined and elegant than casual lunches. These shows featured slim and high-cheek-boned models showcasing the latest designs. However, the modelling industry has evolved with the rise of social media, becoming more inclusive, embracing diversity and breaking stereotypes.

For our August cover story, we speak to six iconic supermodels in the ’80s and ’90s about their experiences in the industry and why older people should feel beautiful and confident just like the youth. Cilla Foong, Adib Yasmin Aman, Hana Toolseram, Datin Catherine Lai, Bernie Chan and Tengku Azura Awang—the “it” models of the time share their thoughts on the impact of social media so far and society’s critical eye.
