The Storm We Made

Vanessa Chan’s debut novel, The Storm We Made, was released on January 2, 2024, to rave reviews. It quickly became a bestseller in the United States and the top pick of notable book clubs, including Good Morning America and BBC Radio 2. It has also been translated into 20 languages.

In her interview with Tatler, she talks about how she had never intended to delve into the historical fiction genre when she set out to write her first novel. The gripping tale centres around Cecily Alcantara, a Malayan mother who becomes an unlikely spy for the invading Japanese army during World War II and the horrifying torrent of consequences that befall her family and community.

Chan talks to us about how, amidst the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic and personal loss, she crafted a narrative deeply rooted in personal anecdotes and historical depth, focusing on the Asian perspective often overlooked in mainstream historical fiction.

Nestled in the exclusive enclave of Damansara Heights, this condominium, which spans a generous 2,600 sq ft, underwent a remarkable metamorphosis to infuse it with bespoke touches and couture-like details.

Lim Hwa Hong, partner of HWA Foundry PLT, who undertook this transformation, shares: “The design deliberation and documentation took some six months to complete, partly due to overseas communications as the clients were all scattered abroad.”

The homeowners, a family with international roots, had plans to use this residence as a pied-à-terre where they could escape the hustle and bustle of their cosmopolitan lives.

Acacia Mardiana Daud, a talented visual artist and photographer has faced a harrowing ordeal. For eight years, she was stalked both online and in person by a man who became increasingly invasive, showing up at her home and sending disturbing messages. Despite her struggles and reporting to the police in 2018, no action was taken initially due to the lack of physical assault.

However, Acacia's perseverance led to a breakthrough in July 2023 when she publicly shared her experience, highlighting the invisible terror of stalking and harassment. This courage contributed to the passing of Malaysia’s Anti-Stalking Law in May 2023, under which her stalker was the first to be charged. Acacia emphasises the importance of a legal framework to protect individuals from such unseen crimes, advocating for awareness and support for victims.

She shares insights on maintaining personal safety and the role of the media in responsibly raising awareness, crediting her strength to a supportive network and the collective efforts leading to legal reforms that offer protection and hope to victims.
