Hans Sy

Adviser, SM Investments

This businessman is the only Filipino member of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction board

He used to be the president of SM Prime Holdings, Inc, which handled the property and asset developments of the family’s mall business. Today, Hans Sy keeps his position as adviser to the Board of SM Investments, Chairman of China Banking Corporation, Chairman of National University and non-executive director at SM Prime.

Having a net worth of USD2 billion, his life’s work is hardly done. True to the Sy name and the legacy of his father, Henry Sy, Sr, who founded the ShoeMart conglomerate, the fourth son is busy with efforts in sustainability and disaster reduction.

In 2014, Sy spearheaded the installation of over 5,000 solar panels on the flagship SM North EDSA multi-level carpark. The Solar Rooftop Project extended until 2019, when up to 10 malls nationwide were added to this list of initiatives. In 2021, SM Bacoor became the 11th to see an installation.

To date, nearly two megatons of carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced from the SM Mall footprint, an effort that is equivalent to up to 1,000 trees per mall. Each mall experiences up to PHP2 million of savings in electricity per month.
