Wick Veloso

President and general manager, Government Service Insurance System

A seasoned banker now poised to make an old institution more efficient and modern

With more than 30 years of banking and capital markets experience, Jose Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso takes on his new challenge as president and general manager of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).

Veloso was the president of the Philippine National Bank before his GSIS appointment. He also became the president and CEO of HSBC Philippines, the first Filipino CEO in HSBC’s 144 years of operations.

Throughout his career, he has garnered various industry recognitions. During his time with PNB, the bank was recognised by the platform The Asian Banker as the Best Managed Bank for demonstrating excellence in its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. He led his PNB team through several successful projects aimed at making it simpler and safer for customers to do their banking during the height of the pandemic. Their team worked closely with customers to better support the overall economy through initiatives such as the PNB Mobile App and the Bank on Wheels. Though Veloso has stepped down from his position as the president, his efforts to improve the lives of Filipinos through his and his team’s efforts continue to be felt.

As the new head of GSIS, Veloso aims to leverage what he has learnt in banking over the past three decades to help build a more efficient institution, one that is aligned with the priorities of the present administration.
