Tatler spotlights five groups in Hong Kong doing impactful work for the queer community

Hong Kong is home to a number of platforms and initiatives working hard on behalf of the city’s vibrant LGBTQIA+ community. These groups champion equal rights, offer vital support and add to Hong Kong’s rich cultural tapestry. But they can’t do it alone. Here are five noteworthy groups with active initiatives you can support today.

1. Rainbow of Hong Kong

Rainbow of Hong Kong has been working to create safe spaces and foster inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community for 25 years. It offers blood testing, counselling, a crisis hotline, community outreach, sexual health education, legal support and domestic violence support. It also works to promote equal opportunities for the LGBTQ+ community  The group also hosts community events, including discussion groups, movies and concerts,  and sporting events.

2. The Gay Games

Gay Games 11 is set to take place from 3-11 November in Hong Kong, marking the first time the event is held in Asia in its 41-year history. With a mission of creating a positive, lasting impact on how society perceives LGBTQIA+ inclusion in Hong Kong, Asia and beyond, the event is open to people of all sexual orientations. Its organisers are hosting regular events in Hong Kong in the lead-up to the main event, including happy hours, and also welcome volunteers.

3. Pink Dot Hong Kong

Pink Dot Hong Kong is an annual LGBTQIA+ carnival and concert established in 2014 with the LGBTQIA+ community and allies in mind. The event calls for inclusivity, diversity and the freedom to love regardless of sexual orientation. Participants are encouraged to wear pink—the name Pink Dot refers to the idea that if everyone who supported the freedom to love gathered in one place, they would form a pink dot on the map.

4. Hong Kong Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Association

The Hong Kong Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Association (HKGALA) is the first organisation in the city dedicated to promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusion in the legal profession. Its network includes 800 legal professionals and some of Hong Kong’s most influential law firms, such as Allen & Overy and Latham & Watkins, and welcomes law students, legal recruiters, and people working in academia and government as well as at NGOs. The organisation meets with legislators and the Equal Opportunities Commissions, and holds public talks spotlighting landmark decisions involving LGBTQIA+ rights in Hong Kong.

5. The Harmonics Choir Hong Kong

The Harmonics Choir Hong Kong was established in 2015, with a mission of empowering its members through music, self-love and support. It performs both on traditional stages as well as spaces as varied as the beach, bars and offices. Past collaborations include a Christmas concert last year with Hong Kong’s African Union Chorale, as well as the LGBTQIA+ youth choir Elements Choir.
