As we celebrate our 22nd anniversary with our annual Tatler Ball, it’s good to recall how the spirit of giving back has become such an integral part of the festivities

Our first Tatler Ball was held in September 2002. We were then caught up in challenging times, with the business climate far from ideal. Adding a fundraising element to the Ball would be most appropriate. One rarely gets to address one’s guests at a high-profile event and appeal to them to make a difference collectively.

So, a tradition was born, one that we are immensely proud of and take very seriously. The Tatler Ball will always be a night of celebration, but it is also an evening where we raise funds by carefully selecting one beneficiary per year. The funds come through a mix of voluntary donations from our guests, the proceeds from our Charity Auction, plus what Tatler donates in cash to get the gifts going.

All the donations are made in the beneficiary’s name, and Tatler underwrites Ball expenses. This ensures that 100 per cent of donations reach the beneficiary intact.

Over the last 21 years, we have had beneficiaries like WWF Philippines, Operation Smile, the Child Protection Network Foundation, MovEd, U-Go, the PGH cancer unit for advanced breast cancer treatment, and Bantay Kalikasan, among other very worthy causes to champion. This year, we focus on helping disabled people through Project Inclusion Network (PIN).

I met Em Aglipay Villar, the former chairperson of PIN and now its most ardent champion, at one dinner, and we spoke at length about PIN and the vital work they do. After several Zoom meetings with Em and Grant Javier, PIN’s executive director, I was confident they would be the perfect beneficiaries for the Tatler Ball 2023.

"Being a part of PIN is a step towards the fulfilment of a mission towards eradicating the barriers that have excluded people with disabilities”

Project Inclusion Network is a non-profit organisation that aims to build a nation where the potential of persons with disabilities is realised. When persons with disabilities can actively participate and productively contribute to their communities, we make an inclusive and barrier-free Philippines.

Did you know that 12 per cent of Filipinos aged 15 and up live with some form of disability? We aim to raise funds to ensure these people become economically empowered through a learning programme.

I asked Em what PIN means to her, and she shared, “I got involved in the work of disability inclusion because of my sister with autism. I witnessed and experienced how she was excluded, how some people disrespected her, and how the dichotomy between people with disabilities and those without has denied people with disabilities the experiences, employment and education that they have a fundamental right to. Being a part of PIN is a step towards the fulfilment of a mission towards eradicating the barriers that have excluded people with disabilities.”

A donation of Php 45,000 will give one disabled person technical and vocational education and training scholarships, equipping them with specialised skills and providing them with personalised job placement assistance.

We aim to raise PHP 11,250,000 at the Tatler Ball through our guests’ donations and our charity auction. This amount will help 250 people learn a trade and be gainfully employed. The positive ripple effect of this cannot be overstated. It will significantly benefit the person, their families and their communities. Indeed, this is embracing abilities and changing lives!

Please help us reach our goal for Project Inclusion Network this 22nd year of the Tatler Ball.
