If you know, you know. There is a difference between the wealthy and ultra wealthy, but if you know what to look for, you can always tell

In every cosmopolitan city in the world you have that group of people who are more wealthy than the majority of that city’s population can hope to become; and then you have the super rich, whose level of wealth could pay off the national debt of a small country, and think nothing of it.

When money truly is of no object to you, you tend to be fairly elusive, but here are some telltale signs one might be in the company of the super rich in Hong Kong.

Your home address is on Peak Road, Jardine’s Lookout or Barker Road. You also have a place on Deep Water Bay Road, though you’d briefly considered Repulse Bay Road, but that’s just for weekends.

Luxury wheels

You and your partner actually each have your own Rolls-Royce (just couldn’t agree on the colour) but when you have one of your drivers take you out, you stick with the Bentley. Don’t want to seem too show-y, you know?

You’ve had to purchase a second berth at the Aberdeen Marina Club so you can land your helicopter without disturbing your Sassoon Road neighbours. It’s okay, you can always have a meal at the Club while you wait for your driver to come pick you up anyway.

You own a restaurant or two, but just for fun. And it’s nice to always be guaranteed a private room, the managers on hand to personally take care of you, and the best dishes that aren’t on the menu when you stop by with your friends.

A helping hand

You love family holidays away from the city. It’s great to be able to expose your children to different places and cultures from a young age, enjoy a family dinner at Kitcho Arashiyama Honten in Kyoto, Japan or Guy Savoy in Paris, France. (Also, what better way to try out a new private chef to have join you back in Hong Kong?) And when you do want time away from the kids—well, that’s why you travel with your amahs.

Timeless timepiece

It’s a passion passed down from your parents and grandparents, and there are many really lovely watches in your collection (not many Rolexes though) but your favourite will always be the ones that are no longer in production. They’re just a bit more special, don’t you think?

Home retail therapy

Unlike Nicole Kidman, you don’t visit the high street when you’re in the mood for a bit of shopping—the shopping comes to you. Your personal stylist is your BFF, and obviously you have Donatella and Pierpaolo on speed dial for emergencies when Lane Crawford doesn’t have a Size 2 in stock.

What’s in a name?

You have a special fondness for certain streets because it’s named after your family. Oh, and that building. Oh, and that park, too. It’s sweet, really.
