Honouring his second lease on life and time in seclusion through work, esteemed visual artist Justin “Tiny” Nuyda overcame the odds with a truly significant and storied collection

To describe the year 2020 as an eventful one is an understatement. While navigating a pandemic that has made a significant impact on the world as we know it, we’ve also had to contend with natural disasters as well as political, societal and personal problems that greatly affect how we live. Weathering his own storm was the visual artist and lepidopterist Justin “Tiny” Nuyda, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. As he recuperated from the intensive treatments while on lockdown, Nuyda found himself inspired, particularly by the outstanding quality of care he received in the hands of his doctors.

A pillar of Filipino modern art and a co-founder of the legendary Saturday Group (through which he enjoyed many years of friendship and camaraderie with other local art and literary greats, many of whom were National Artists), the enigmatic Nuyda has been painting for nearly five decades. His works—and many have been hard-pressed to pinpoint exactly what kind of art he creates and which discipline he subscribes to—have a cerebral quality to them. With a combination of lengthy lively brush strokes and striking colours, the landscapes Nuyda commits to his canvasses are gateways to how he sees the world.

In honour of Nuyda’s 75th birthday, his daughter Ayni established the Search Mindscape Foundation in hopes of fostering a stronger engagement and collaboration between and among Filipino creatives. To help widen the reach of this mission, the Foundation linked up with Adefuin Design Studio and Sigvard Selections to launch Art Unbound, an online exhibition showcasing 12 artworks by Nuyda done by the artist during his time in quarantine. He transformed his home into a realm of fractal worlds, bringing to life what may very well be one of the most definitive collections of his storied career.

Among the artworks exhibited was a self-portrait titled The World As My Eyes See It, in which the central figure is a large eye. Says Ayni, “It is a close-up of my father’s eye looking out into the world, which, in his eyes, is chaotic and destructive—it is his commentary on nature.” Through this work, the artist acknowledges not only the reality of the present crisis, but the inherent good that remains as well.

The exhibition ran for a month, from May 15 to June 15; each week revealed three new paintings alongside their corresponding perspectives. In addition, Nuyda also held a charitable auctioning partnership with Salcedo Auctions, raising Php 7.75 million pesos for Kythe Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life for children suffering from chronic illnesses.

“Witnessing my father passionately paint every single day during the community quarantine in spite of his health predicaments was inspiring,” shares Ayni. “Through this digital platform, we had the opportunity to feature a narrative that encouraged the local art community to share their own stories. Our foundation firmly believes that creatively communicating the stories behind artworks and artists adds significant value to the entire experience.” As part of the Art Unbound initiative, the Foundation also launched a contest, inviting artists to photograph their workspaces and showcase how the lockdown affected their creative processes.

For Ayni, each work her father produces somehow always emerges better than what precedes it. “You can see the gradual progression of his stylistic approach, yet at the same time, observe a consistent identity. His discipline is impeccable.”
