Rolex Matches World’s Greatest Artists To Promising Protégés In 2020-2021 Arts Initiative
Rolex is known for luxury watches, but another one of its company highlights is its Arts Initiative, which pairs masterful creatives to promising young protégés from all over the world. Inspired by the belief that the arts is a continuum, Rolex continues to support creatives through this exclusive mentorship programme.
Protégés are given the rare opportunity to spend significant amounts of time with the movers and shakers of their respective fields. Officially completed within the course of two years, protégés and their mentors usually continue to maintain lifelong relationships that impact both sides in positive ways. In 2018-2019, protégés were coached by their mentors in the field of architecture, dance, literature, and music. In the upcoming 2020-2021 group, the fields of theatre and visual arts will be further expounded on by the likes of Spike Lee, Phyllida Lloyd, Lin Manuel-Miranda, and Carrie Mae Weems.
Spike Lee, President of the Jury at the 73rd Festival de Cannes, is an American filmmaker who has created more than 35 feature films and documentaries. His socially conscious films have impacted audiences worldwide with their wit and storytelling. Some of his most notable works include “BlacKkKlansman”, “Malcolm X”, and “Jungle Fever”. A mentor in the field of Film, Lee has already chosen to work with 33-year-old Native American, Kyle Bell, for this year’s Arts Initiative programme.
Phyllida Lloyd is often recognised for her boldness in the field of theatre and opera. A staunch supporter of gender equality both on and off the stage, Lloyd has directed such hits as “Mamma Mia!”, “The Iron Lady”, and the official Margaret Thatcher biopic. This year, she has chosen to work with 33-year-old Whitney White in the field of theatre.
Carrie Mae Weems is an acclaimed American artist whose prolific works have been seen through various media including image, text, film, video, and performance art. Her topics have helped her delve into complex human experiences such as sexism, racism, and class; her works have been exhibited at various institutions throughout the world. Today, she continues to enjoy the respect befitting a master at visual arts. Her protégé is 34-year-old Colombian, Camila Rodriguez Triana.
While Lin-Manuel Miranda is perhaps best known for his performance in “Hamilton”, many also know him as a Tony award-winning composer, Pulitzer Prize winner, and renowned lyricist. His portfolio boasts of projects such as “Saturday Night Live”, “Moana”, and “Mary Poppins Returns”. While yet to choose his protégé, Lin-Manuel Miranda is a promising mentor to a lucky fellow in the open category.
