Cover Javi Martinez and Tim Yap

The Tatler Philippines' August 2020 issue is a first of its kind. This month, we welcome our magazine's first same-sex married couple to grace the cover in 19 years of publication! Meet Tim Yap and Javi Martinez.

Tim Yap and Javi Martinez are familiar names among Manila society. Yet despite their public personas as "eventologists", the pair have managed to remain lowkey about their relationship. This month, Tatler Philippines is proud to unveil its latest issue with Tim and Javi on the cover, both of whom manage to get candid about their marriage, their identity, and their upcoming forecast for the events industry.

A month after Pride, Tatler Philippines continues to celebrate love with its first-ever same-sex married couple cover stars. It's particularly special as it is not only a first for Tatler Philippines but for Tatler Asia as well. It's a cover that's been a long time coming in terms of representation and acceptance. During the monthly Tatler Talks, which was hosted by our Editor-in-Chief, Anton San Diego, Tim and Javi opened up about their past, their present, and their future plans.

The pair first discussed their photoshoot with renowned photographer, Mark Nicdao. Shot on location at Shangri-La at the Fort, the photoshoot was something Tim and Javi said they were originally nervous about due to their private nature. Although both work in a very public field and are known to organise grandiose celebrations, the two have also chosen to be subtle when celebrating their love. Their wedding, for instance, was very intimate, with only a handful of friends present at their Manhattan union.

Speaking on their family life, the couple first introduced their adorable pets — which include a roster of dogs, cats, a turtle, a tortoise, and now, a black parrot — before moving on to more serious topics, namely their sexuality. Both admitted that some of their family members needed time to process each of their son's coming out stories. Thankfully, today, their families have learned to accept their sons and be happy for their union. Of course, they both acknowledged that there are still people out there who live in fear or shame because of their sexuality. It's not unheard of for people to be ostracised or punished for simply being themselves — which is why, Tim and Javi say, they are grateful for the opportunity to show people that sexuality isn't something to be ashamed of. Everyone has a right to be proud of who they are, regardless of wherever they find themselves on the spectrum. In the end, Tim emphasises, it all comes down to respect.

Tim and Javi then briefly touched on a few of their most memorable projects. These include Vicky Belo and Hayden Kho's wedding in France, a New Year's party at Amanpulo, and a Cartier event in Cebu. Of course, with the events industry as hard hit by COVID-19 as it is, the couple has had to coop up at home to stay safe. Tim, ever the busy bee, had used this time to form a new food concept called Wok With Yap. They offer healthy rice topping alternatives that include fish, quinoa, and adlai. Javi also spoke briefly about his exciting new project with Uniqlo: a fashion show that took place before MECQ where, to ensure their safety, Javi and his team had to be locked down for three days at a hotel during production. Thankfully, everyone is healthy and the event was a success.

Nearing the end of the show, Anton surprised the couple with a beautifully made video of messages from the couple's closest friends. Warm wishes from Lea Salonga, Rajo Laurel, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, and more preceded a fun segment where the couple played a quick game that helped us learn more about them. As usual, the Tatler Talks ended with questions from the audience.

Although Tim and Javi represent a very important milestone for Tatler Asia, their Tatler Talks segment was also one of the most relaxed. Their sincerity and down-to-earth nature shine through, as does their eagerness to impart a bit of courage and insight on what is a broad spectrum of valid experiences within the LGBT community. With much love and gratitude, Tim and Javi will continue to celebrate Pride every day alongside everyone here at Tatler Philippines.
