Stay on the sartorial pulse and dress to impress with these top tips from multi-brand fashion concept store, Distinqt!

This trend report touches on two prevalent themes present in many top brands’ collections this season. Not only do we outline and highlight select seasonal trends but also give acute style advice that will keep you looking dapper and stunning at any time of the year. Read on to find out what you should be wearing:

Trend Report No. 1: Mad For Monochrome

When in doubt, always turn to black and white. This season, brands are loving monochromatic palettes. This classic duo is forever chic, stylish and timeless. To bring an added level of pop into your black and white ensembles seek out pieces with texture and patterns. Try to play with layering and draping to further enhance and elevate your look.

Designers have brought the basics to new contemporary heights by going a little more adventurous when playing with monotones: think uneven hems, transparent fabrics, mesh, and out of the ordinary cuts. The devil is really in the details; you need not depend on colours to turn heads.

Take a look at these three tips on how to look fashion forward and sartorially up to date.

Talk Texture To Me

Let's talk texture. Find fabrics that are unique to the touch for some added flare. Pleats, mesh, net, or waffle textures for example can add a whole new dimension to a black and white ensemble. Create a head-turning look by layering to create texture and levels. When buying black and whites, aside from the basic building blocks such as a white tee or the little black dress, invest in pieces with out-of-the-ordinary shapes, eye catching details, and contemporary silhouettes.

Tip: When layering remember these formulas: “short-over-long,” and “structured-over-sleek”.

Don’t Play By The Book

Let’s play a game of substitution and update your go-to looks. Elevate your aesthetic by making some small and meaningful adjustments. Picture this: You’re checking out your closet reaching for that favourite top, dress or jumper, and starting to put a look together. This time, instead of what you would typically pick to match your outfit, try something new by introducing edgy nuances to stay current and modern. Switch it up and pick a funky shoe, a bright bag, or stack on the accessories to step slightly out of your comfort zone.

Pushing Your Limits

Now, for the more daring, don’t be afraid to take the next step! Be a little risky, maybe even a little bit frisky. Turn a trend inside out and make it your own by going against some of fashion’s rules. For example, you may have noticed more risqué see-through ensembles, lower block-heels, lots of layered fabric and jewellery, and biker shorts coming back to the fore. Embrace clashing shapes, odd lengths, and funks shapes. Seek out iconic pieces to complement your closet such as items that call more attention with irregular cuts or detailing.

Trend Report No. 2: Colour Me Happy

This second trend is on the opposite side of the spectrum. Bright, bold, eye-catching, vivid colours have made their mark on runways and in recent collections this fall and should find their way into your aesthetic too! Designers have been playing with an array of show-stopping combinations to make colours pop on an even grander scale. Keep an eye out for stunning jewel tones and print-on-print action.

If you are reaching for rich and luxurious jewel tone colours then you are on the right track. These posh hues are definitely worth the investment as they are timeless and dazzling. However, instead of going for one bold colour, go full throttle and colour-block jewel tones from head to toe. Dress with passion and purpose and make a statement with the energy of colour. Don’t play shy; saturate your ensemble and be proud of it!

Above Pair a rich pink sapphire halter-and-trouser set with an equally rich amethyst hued heel. For accessories, a boxy handbag done in prints is a good breaker and balance. Statement earrings complete the dynastic feel: Satin top and pants (Nanushka), Patterned bag (Versus Versace), Satin bow heels (N21), Gold earrings (Schield).

Above Metallics go smashingly well with vintage patterns. For a change, toss on boots instead of heels when wearing a short, swingy skirt: Patterned top (Versus Versace), Pleated miniskirt (Versus Versace), Two-toned bag (Versus Versace), Boots with ring detail (MM6 Maison Margiela).

Pile On The Print

From vintage prints to print-on-print madness, go wild and be sure to have fun! From top to bottom, don those eye-catching and head-turning patterns. Be unapologetically loud and over-the-top by mixing and matching clashing prints. Express yourself and get a little crazy by scooping up some plaids, metallics, florals, houndstooth and geometric finds to make sure you stand out in a crowd.

A great way to add a splash of print to your day is to make use of striking scarves featuring intricate illustrations or patterns. Aside from adding a scarf to your outfit, wear tops and dresses inspired by the iconic scarf designs (think, Versace).

With powerful prints, things can get a bit distracting so make sure to follow a few guidelines to make sure you still look polished. To balance out the heaviness of playing with patterns, utilise varying levels of structure. When rocking a completely print-happy look, try a structured top and a more flowy, relaxed bottom to counter or vice versa. Pair sleek and tailored with easy-going loose silhouettes for contrast.
