The Chanel Métiers d'Art show might have taken place at New York's iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) on Tuesday, but creative director Karl Lagerfeld's guests were whisked a world away -- to the pyramids of Ancient Egypt.
Supermodel Kaia Gerber and singer and designer Pharrell Williams were among the famous faces that took to the catwalk for the event, striding around the Temple of Dendur dressed in an opulent collection of separates accented with regal gold metallic hues.
From the elaborately long tassel earrings right down to the gold thigh-high boots, no pharoah reference was overlooked. The house's signature tweeds were worked into modern suits with structured, dramatic shoulders, while tunics were edged with gold piping and dressed up with layers of necklaces. Gold lamé was paired with black leather for a modern spin on the theme, and a double denim outfit reserved for Gerber was embellished with symbolic motifs. Handbags in the shape of mini pyramids and golden hats completed the aesthetic.
In terms of the makeup, an exaggerated winged eyeliner look that Cleopatra herself would have been proud of further underscored the visual references of the evening, teamed with hair that was slicked back from the face and left hanging loose and wavy at the back, in a style that befits every thoroughly modern Egyptian queen.
