Dior presented its fall 2023 collection in Mumbai last week, and the Gateway of India, an iconic monument that was built in the early 20th century, served as the stage for showcasing the stunning designs inspired by Indian heritage and history.

For this collection, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri turned to the French fashion house’s archives; namely former artistic director Marc Bohan’s designs, which incorporated elements from his travels to Mumbai and Delhi in 1962.

Chiuri also collaborated with Karishma Swali, director at Chanakya Atelier and Chanakya School of Craft in Mumbai, to craft sophisticated silhouettes that referenced cuts often seen in traditional Indian garments. Also, in tribute to the culture’s fashion, Chiuri used a plethora of silk and embroidered fabrics in rich shades of green, yellow, pink and purple.

However, the clothes on the catwalk were not the only ones to draw gasps of delight. Indian celebrities seen on the front row also showed off some amazing outfits—some of which were straight off the runway—while others chose Dior pieces that echoed the theme of the evening.
