From Michelle Yeoh to Henry Golding, here are the Asian stars who are experts at striking the balance between subtle and opulent

“Stealth wealth” or “old money aesthetic” are just some of the words being used to describe one of fashion’s most captivating trends right now: quiet luxury.

Understated, elegant and yet casual, quiet luxury typically consists of timeless silhouettes, top quality materials and neutral tones. Totally devoid of branding or logos, these items don’t shout “I’m expensive!” because they don’t need to. The immaculate tailoring is instantly recognisable for anyone in the know, and leaves no room for misunderstanding its premium prices.

Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana and The Row are some of the brands at the forefront of quiet luxury, an aesthetic that has been amplified in popular culture recently.

For example, in HBO’s boardroom drama Succession, costume designer Michelle Matland often dresses the ultra-wealthy characters in unassuming pieces from brands such as Maison Margiela and Altuzarra—versus characters from the lower rungs of the social ladder who are often depicted as wearing “ludicrously capacious” Burberry bags with a blatantly obvious check print—to offer visual clues for audience that hint at the class divide on the show.

It’s even seen in real life courtrooms as an indicator of unshakeable confidence. For example, during her recent trial to contest her involvement in a skiing incident, actress Gwenyth Paltrow exclusively wore shades of cream, grey and olive from the likes of Prada and her own brand, G. Label by Goop. It stood out for its simplicity and collected undertone.

Thus far, this trend has been predominantly Eurocentric. However, there are some Asian celebs who have mastered the quiet luxury aesthetic, and here are some of our favourites.

1. Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh looks equally chic on red carpets as she does on press junkets and in her downtime. While the designer gowns she wears for more high profile events are bold, memorable and unexpected, her off-duty style is simple but polished, classic but casual—just the right balance to fit the stealth wealth bill.

2. Park Seo-joon

Korean style is all about smart, almost collegiate vibes right now with its emphasis on blazers, zip neck jumpers and straight leg trousers in classic cuts and neutral shades. Actor Park Seo-joon is on the money with this look, wearing a stylish collared duffle coat with little branding and a tasteful leather satchel.

3. Freida Pinto

Indian actress Freida Pinto has embraced motherhood with grace and style. While her everyday looks revolve around minimalistic knitwear sets in cream and caramel shades, her red carpet ‘fits tend to speak to the duality between modern and classic, and softness and strength with its chic, high-power aesthetic that are cut from butter-soft fabrics.

4. Henry Golding

Even when he isn’t playing the heir to the Young empire in Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Henry Golding is still a king of the old money aesthetic. Tailored suits, crisp but soft button-down shirts and leather loafers seem to be staples in his wardrobe, but it’s the low-key but rich colour palettes—think olive, caramel and dusty rose—and lack of branding that make his ensembles approachable yet luxurious.

5. Jung Ho-yeon

Korean model and actress Jung Ho-yeon can pull off a plethora of styles, but outside of the limelight she gravitates towards a simpler look, which often includes tailored denim, and statement jackets in neutral colours.

6. Ken Watanabe

Japanese actor Ken Watanabe has always exuded class, and often wears black, white and grey whether he’s on the clock or in his down time. Even when playing sports he opts for clothing that is simultaneously casual but fitted and with an added detail to elevate the look.

7. Lilly Singh

The proudly South Asian and queer Canadian comedian, YouTuber and advocate for inclusion is well known for her impeccable suits in aggressively bold colours. But when she does quiet luxury, she cuts a fine figure in shushed neutral tones, flawless tailoring, and softly shimmering fabrics that whisper, “oh yes, I’m expensive”.
