This fashion-focused film is bringing the glamour of the ’70s and ’80s back, and here are our top picks for the trends you need to revisit

Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto and Mădălina Ghenea are all setting high standards for outfit inspiration this winter. The characters they play in House of Gucci—Patrizia Reggiani, Maurizio Gucci, Paolo Gucci and Sophia Loren, respectively—live glamorous lives and dress extravagantly all the time.

There’s no reason you can’t take elements from these looks to incorporate into your own style, and here are five fashion trends Tatler spotted in the film that we want to bring back.

1. Lots of lace

Lace doesn’t need to be confined to undergarments and can be elegant and interesting if done well. Choose items with a structured lace, ideally featuring large embroidery, and avoid anything flimsy or frilly. Another way to ensure it looks luxurious is to stick to a single colour, as Lady Gaga has done here with her black-and-white looks.

2. Power suits

The Gucci suit was everything—large shoulders, lush fabrics, and with all the bells and whistles such as waistcoats and pocket squares. No pattern was too much, no colour too outrageous: Hello, Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci in that fuchsia corduroy suit. Even the women wore fabulously fitting skirt suits and dresses inspired by men’s tailoring. Spice up dressing for the cold with a fabulous suit.

3. Red hot

House of Gucci revolves around power, and what colour is more powerful than red? Perhaps it’s used as a visual tool to symbolise how Patrizia Reggiani wanted to influence her husband’s family business, or because it’s one of the two of colours so emblematic of Gucci (red and green). Either way, red is a ravishing colour for the holiday season.

4. The little black dress

The little black dress is a wardrobe staple we haven’t spoken about in a while, and it’s time it made a comeback. Long-sleeved, nipped in at the waist and knee length is the consensus for the dresses featured in this film, and it’s pertinent to style with heels and a great blowout. Throw a large coat over your shoulders for some drama and complete the look with a top handle bag.

5. Excessive jewellery

If there’s one takeaway we got from the film, it’s that we could probably put on some more jewellery. That era of Gucci visually represented playful excess, something the Patrizia Reggiani nailed with her “more is more” attitude, and her plethora of jewels, chains and gems she sports throughout the movie is something to behold.
