Marina Raphael talks to Tatler about creating modern heirlooms for strong women and adding Swarovski’s signature sparkle to her bags
As a sixth-generation member of the family behind the Austrian jewellery and crystal giant Swarovski, Marina Raphael’s love for style and accessorising runs deep.
Despite graduating in Business Management from King’s College London, the part-Greek, part-Swiss-Austrian heiress decided to pursue handbag design and started her eponymous label when she was 20. In under five years, her label has burgeoned into a million-dollar business and her handbags are carried by the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Priyanka Chopra Jonas—all of which have landed Raphael on the Forbes 30 under 30 and Fortune 40 under 40 lists.
Ahead of Mother’s Day, we catch up with Raphael as she shares stories from the women in her family who’ve inspired her designs.
What are some of the lessons you’ve learnt from your mother and grandmother?
My mother and grandmother are my role models and style icons. Their confidence, elegance and drive have always inspired me to design for the independent, modern woman. From them, I have learned that being stylish means staying true to yourself and always feeling comfortable in your own skin and clothes. That is why I encourage everyone to wear their Marina Raphael bag in a way that reflects their individuality and makes them feel truly empowered.
The best piece of advice I have received from my mother was to stay focused, passionate, persistent and true to my vision because that is what will build a business that lasts beyond trends. Also, if you’re hardworking and have integrity, people will want to work with you.
Having Marina Giori Lhota, a fashion icon and Swarovski's board member, as your grandmother must have been special. Tell us some of your memories with her.
When I was a little girl, I remember sitting on the floor of my grandmother’s dressing room and watching her put together her outfits for the coming week. Whether it was casual workwear, an evening look or a travel outfit, I was always impressed by the way she would so effortlessly combine vintage pieces with upcoming and established brands. I admired that she was always unafraid to experiment while being able to own every look and make it flawless.
What struck me as most amazing was how she always remembered from where she had bought a specific piece, which designer and which season it was from, and for which occasion she had worn it. My grandmother was the person who really introduced me to the fashion world and educated me on the intricate craftsmanship behind some of the best designed pieces.
