There’s a new girl in town, and it isn’t the Y2K and the McBling microtrend

Think medieval and luxuriant but modern—this best describes the emerging microtrend Enyacore. Similar to Y2K and McBling, it's another blast from the past but with a twist. Fashion, after all, repeats itself.

Y2K was the main character of the spring 2022 collections and the inspiration for many home furniture, while McBling took the streets by storm with its tracksuits, trucker hats, and baby tees. Enyacore is quite different from the two. Imagine the three as siblings with enyacore as the eldest. She's quite similar to them in that they took inspiration from the past, but she's leaning toward a moodier and more gothic style.

As the former two took to the main stage last year, critics can't help but predict how Enyacore can do the same this year or the next.

A focus on all things medieval

It's only a matter of time before people get slowly tired of the bubblegum tees and skirts that made their way to runways, campaigns, and everyone's homes last year. Some are even over it by now.

According to Vice, New Yorkers are starting to evolve their Y2K-revival tastes of last year and curating a sultrier aesthetic that yearns not just for the 1990s but also the 1290s. Inspired by Enya’s Orinoco Flow, released in 1998, people now opt for Brutalist furniture materials with a medieval bent.

Another way to describe Enyacore is that it's “whimsigothic”.

According to the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute (CARI), “whimsigothic” is an aesthetic that is contemporaneous with the peak popularity of gothic-inspired pop/rock music, Tim Burton, and the graphic design work of Margo Chase, Vrontikis, and a bit of Vaughan Oliver. As Vice describes, “Enyacore is all about blending stark contrasts and brut materials. It’s about sipping your wine as you lock eyes with a rat.”

It's lucrative in furniture, product, interior design, and even fashion.

Above Enya Patricia Brennan, known professionally as Enya.

Enya is an Irish singer-songwriter known for her Celtic music. She's one of the most financially successful singers of all time, although a bit of a recluse, for she rarely makes public appearances and interviews.

To the public, her songs are the aural equivalent of astrology, both mystical and fun. One of her songs, Only Time, provides ambience at yoga retreats, facials, and tarot card readings. She's the epitome of mysterious, gothic, and fun all at the same time. She also became globally known for singing for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film.
