From Blackpink star Jisoo to Emily in Paris’ Ashley Park, see how celebrities embraced the emerging colour trend at Fashion Week
Bored of Barbiecore? You’re not alone. In 2023, a new colour trend is emerging that might finally shake fashion free from its obsession with all things pink. The colour of the day—if you ask Fashion Week’s most stylish attendees—is purple.
Lilac, lavender, plum, magenta and other shades of purple popped up on the streets of New York, Milan and Paris, where celebrities and style leaders convened for the fall/winter 2023 fashion shows.
The most notable example came from Blackpink singer Jisoo, who made her Paris Fashion Week appearance in a violet dress. The K-pop star instantly stood out at the Dior show, which is a feat in itself considering how she was joined by many stylish guests like Heart Evangelista and Zhang Ziyi. And her colour choice made all the difference.

At New York Fashion Week earlier this month, Emily in Paris star Ashley Park also propagated the power of purple. The actress arrived to the PatBo runway show dressed in the brand’s crystal-embellished bodysuit, bomber jacket and wide-leg sequin pants—all in violet.
Purple isn’t just reserved for flamboyant ensembles, even though it was Prince’s favourite colour. Fashion designer Marc Jacobs and Instagram’s fashion chief Eva Chen both looked powerful in their statement purple coats, him in a belted style from Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2023 menswear collection, and her in a double-breasted leather car coat by Oscar de la Renta.
If their coats had come in other bright colours, like yellow or pink, their outfits might have been seen as frivolous. But purple is special; its historic association with royalty and wealth makes the bold colour appealing even to the most conservative of dressers, such as Kate Middleton. In the past few months, the Princess of Wales has stepped into her new royal title with a wardrobe that favours Viva Magenta, a reddish shade of purple that has been named the colour of the year by Pantone.
