Barcelona’s most sought-after bridal designer, Señora Rosa Clará, gets candid with Monique Madsen and shares her thoughts on modern brides, wedding trends, and finding ‘the one’

A Rosa Clará bridal gown is a true representation of the kind of bride the designer of this eponymous label envisions: traditionally feminine yet distinctly modern. Although characterised by contemporary details such as skirts with pockets and sharp silhouettes, the design aesthetic of this proudly Spanish prêt-à-porter brand remains romantic and regal.

Rosa Clará applies old-school techniques alongside conventional methods to ensure each element is handcrafted to perfection. Even the simplest of her most straightforward and figure-skimming designs feature much intricacy in the details—which is normally the deciding factor for a discerning bride when hesistating on a ready-to-wear purchase. Known to creatively formulate practical design cues into a timeless piece, she gives her creations a uniquely stylish twist—like a discreetly detachable train or removable sleeves—that has become her signature. She also makes utmost comfort a priority in her designs. It’s been said that Rosa Clará is as much a designer as a dream maker for many brides.

Can you describe a Rosa Clará bride?

She knows what she wants! Now, more than ever, modern-day brides are strong, opinionated women. There are no rules, and there is a strong need to be as unique as possible. Which is why I make sure our range of styles is as varied as can be and customisation is always an option.

What advice can you give to brides in search of the perfect wedding dress?

You need to be comfortable on your big day. On top of all the things you worry about—your dress should not be one of them! This is why I love to collaborate with brides. I love learning everything about them—their stories, their concerns—as it keeps my ideas fresh and modern. The ready-to-wear concept becomes a necessary option for many who can see the relief of not having to stress the day before the wedding about not having the right dress.

Have you really met a bride without a dress the day before her wedding?

So many times, you can’t imagine! Brides come to my atelier before their wedding day—crying, helpless, disappointed with the dress they have or about to wear. This is why I love what I do and the brand it has built. Imagine what could happen if ready-to-wear for brides did not exist?

What is it about bridal wear that you love and how did your RTW line reach its success?

Although I appreciate a bit of an edge and contemporary feel, I also love the idea of tradition. I am very romantic myself as you can see in my designs. But we are talking about a process, much like how you choose your groom! Try different gowns and have the freedom to choose your own. A gown that will make you say, “Yes! This is it!” Bridal is such a lovely business to be involved in and I feel privileged to dress so many women on such a special day. Just to be a part of that big energy of love.

Do you have a favourite moment in the process?

There is that time towards the end of developing a collection or making a certain dress for a specific bride, when the reality of the design and the merging of ideas come to life. Sometimes it’s like the ideas have a life of their own and in the end, the result also surprises me! You use the most beautiful laces in your collections.

How do you make sure this traditional fabric acquires a contemporary look?

Lace is synonymous with weddings. If not in the dress you will surely find lace somewhere at a wedding. That is a tradition I do not wish to let go. There is something so sensual and feminine about lace—and there is so much to do with them. It can be sheer and sexy, but can also be covered up and made to look very ladylike. It fits any personality, really. It is so versatile and a great expression for me. As in my design and life in general, I am always seeking duality and balance—masculine and feminine, hard meeting soft, light meeting dark, tradition meeting modern.

How do you stay inspired and motivated season after season?

Travel! It’s fantastic that destination weddings are a big trend now, so guests can go on vacations too. Travel is a great way to rewire. Now I cannot wait to explore the Philippines and see how this trip will inspire me.

The Rosa Clará boutique is located at Tower III of The Residences, Greenbelt, Makati.
