Which gemstone is associated with your birth month? What powers does it have? How can you best harness its energy? Tatler’s expert Joyce Tsang helps demystify birthstones and their properties

Peridots might be considered by many as the affordable cousin of emeralds, this green stone is spectacular in its own right. Originating from lava, meteorites and olivine mineral found in earth’s upper mantle, peridots are known for their olive green colour, with the hue’s intensity being determined by the amount of iron present in the crystal.

Peridots have been known to humans for thousands of centuries. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to mine the stone, and they believed it to be the “gem of the sun”, with powers to ward off evil. Some historians even believe that several stones in Egyptian queen Cleopatra’s collection of emeralds might have been peridots.

In ancient Rome, this gemstone was known as the “evening emerald”, due to its ability to reflect light even under low lighting. In medieval Europe too, peridots were used to adorn ecclesiastical treasures.

In Asia, diverse cultures have appreciated peridots throughout history, often integrating them into spiritual or healing practices. For instance, in China, peridots—along with other green gems—were associated with growth and harmony, while other cultures such as Thailand or Malaysia held the stone in high regard for its protective and healing powers.

To this day, those who believe in the mystical properties of gemstones recognise and deeply value peridot’s powers. We spoke to Tatler’s expert Joyce Tsang, founder of crystal healing service Stone & Star, to find out more about this green beauty.

Energy influence

This green gemstone has often been associated with good luck, prosperity and positivity. It’s is often used as a protective stone as it’s believed to guard against negativity. Resonating with both the solar plexus and the heart chakra, it is thought to integrate will power and love, urging the wearer to follow their heart’s desires.

In terms of emotional healing, Tsang says peridots are believed to help heal the ego from feelings of jealousy or anger. The gem encourages the wearer to cultivate gratitude for the self and to recognise the happiness that exists in their lives.

Because of its green colour, the stone is also said to reinforce the bond between the wearer and the environment, promoting a greater appreciation of nature.

Health benefits

Peridots are thought to alleviate negative or stagnant energy and emotional burdens that may manifest in the body, potentially causing discomfort in the heart, stomach, intestines and liver. The gemstone is also said to support blood circulation, liver function and the overall digestive system.

Tsang says that peridots can calm nerves and anxiety, especially when placed upon the stomach or the solar plexus area. This can be particularly helpful in soothing a person if they get butterflies in the stomach.

The gem is also thought to aid in overcoming addictions, particularly those related to tobacco. However, it’s important to remember that these beliefs are not supported by modern medicine and should not replace any traditional medical treatment or advice.

Who should wear them?

While traditionally associated with those born under the sign of Leo, peridots are also recommended for those with Virgo, Libra and Sagittarius star signs.

People hoping to improve their self-worth may also find this stone beneficial, as its energies are often thought to promote a sense of self-assurance. Similarly, those who wish to invite more joy and optimism into their lives might also benefit from turning to peridots.

Entrepreneurs and businesspersons may also be drawn to this gemstone. It is believed to help one achieve greater levels of success when these intentions are aligned with the heart. Tsang says those who are fighting any kind of negativity might find solace in this gemstone, as its uplifting properties are thought to protect against negative energies and promote a sense of well-being.

How to wear them?

Peridots can be worn as rings, bracelets or pendants. It is often recommended to set the gemstone in gold, as both are associated with the sun and are said to resonate with the sun’s energy. The combination is believed to ward off negative spirits, cultivating a protective and uplifting energy field around the wearer. The connection to the sun’s power also symbolises abundance and joy, reflecting the positive attributes associated with stone.

Care tips

Despite the stone’s moderate hardness, it’s important to handle your peridot jewellery with care. Gently wash them with a non-chemical soap and water, and dry with a soft cloth immediately to prevent water damage.

To cleanse its energy, place your peridot on clear quartz or selenite, as these materials help in clearing all negative or stagnant energies, leaving your stone refreshed and energetically balanced.
