Jonathan Anderson continues on his creative streak, showing Loewe’s fall-winter 2021 collection via newspaper, a surprise collaboration, and a vibrant collection that will turn that frown upside down
“The Loewe show has been cancelled,” blared the dramatic headline from the newspaper included in the Madrid-based brand’s fall-winter 2021 show kit. As far as show formats go, since the Covid-19 pandemic have rendered physical shows almost impossible, Loewe and Jonathan Anderson have switched up the format of the show experience, cross-pollinating digital and physical in intriguing ways—past formats have included The Show in a Box (SS21 menswear) and The Show on the Wall (SS21 womenswear).
This season, Anderson took inspiration directly from the news, creating his own newspaper, housed in a tin box—“a time capsule,” the creative director describes it—along with knick-knacks that tie into the theme. The newspaper delivered FW21’s beautiful collection images, but it also housed a surprise: a collaboration with writer Danielle Steel, who published the first chapter of her upcoming novel, The Affair, in the newspaper. “I’ve always admired [Steel] as this prolific writer who really encourages people globally to read,” he said.
Surprises aside, flipping through the pages of Loewe’s newspaper brought one feeling to mind: joy. Bright pops of colour peppered the collection, a key theme of the season. “I do think there is a very strong psychedelic influence to it,” he explained.

This came through in the electric blues, effervescent oranges, and sunshine yellows that were on the clothes, as well as shoes and bags. “It can uplift us,” Anderson added.
