To create the image of the Ox, these watchmakers employ a host of age-old techniques from Japanese urushi to Swiss grand feu enamelling.

Limited to 88 pieces, every single dial was made in a century-old workshop in Japan by master lacquer artist Minori Koizumi. This technique merges layers of lacquer from the sap of the urushi tree with gold powder for a meticulous rendering of the golden ox harnessed to a wagon.

A highly anticipated release every Lunar New Year, Chopard has been producing urushi dials of the Chinese zodiac animals since 2013.

Fascinatingly complex, the watch displays both the Gregorian and Chinese calendars on a single dial, a monumental feat considering the former observes the solar cycle while the latter is based on the lunar cycle. It makes the perfect watch for this festive season, with the ox appearing in an aperture at '12'. The zodiac animal is also engraved on the white gold oscillating weight visible on the caseback.

Available in limited edition platinum case (50 pieces) as well as non-limited red gold case.

In a magnificent demonstration of the artisanal treasures at Vacheron Constantin, the Grand Feu enamel dial is distinguished by a vigorous-looking ox hand-engraved in either platinum (for platinum case) or gold (for 18k pink gold case). The backdrop features delicate plant motifs inspired by Chinese iconography. Certain to get you the right kind of attention at the next reunion dinner, each version is limited to 12 pieces.
