Strong and edgy with an urban-retro vibe, the Japanese urbanwear icon celebrates its 70th year with “Downtown Rave”

Under fiery red lights that showed off a beautifully curated array of shoes and apparel, living mannequins struck poses and moved in time with the thumping beat of electronic dance music as Onitsuka Tiger officially launched Downtown Rave, its 2019 fall/winter collection, at Warehouse 30 in Bang Rak, Bangkok, Thailand.

Philippine Tatler was among the select few invited to the launch which was staged last 25 June 2019, and had a front row seat to view a collection that combines the edgy, party-hopper look of the European rave scene of the ‘90s with the classic comfort and craftsmanship that have come to characterise the Japanese urbanwear brand.

“I did a lot of rave gigs years ago, as I lived in a place where there were a lot of dance clubs and DJs,” Onitsuka Tiger creative director Andrea Pompilio explains when asked about the raison d’etre behind the collection. “The outfits [worn at the time] were like the borderline between the styles of the ‘80s and ‘90s.”

According to Pompilio, the Downtown Rave collection was inspired by the way people would dress for nights out in Europe, particularly in Italy where he grew up and in many cities throughout the continent which were considered centres for electronic dance music and its attendant culture and style. However, in the context of contemporary fashion, the colourful and edgy look of that era has been tempered by the more relaxed style of modern urban dressing. The end result is a hip yet comfortable selection of shoes and clothing that would be perfect on both wintry slopes and city streets.

For this particular collection, the overall look is a throwback to the fun and playful club scene: simple, easy to wear, but aesthetically strong enough to make a bright statement.

There are padded jackets in both shiny and matte finishes that are all set to hit the slopes or the party scene; backpacks are made big enough to hold everything from ski-and-snowboarding gear to one’s urban essentials; and A-line miniskirts and track-pants are paired with chunky-soled shoes for a play on edgy elegance.

The shoes in the Downtown Rave line combine Onitsuka Tiger’s signature emphasis on exceptional comfort and quality with Pompilio’s cool and youthful aesthetic. Along with thick, clunky soles, these shoes sport oversized versions of the brand’s signature interwoven stripes: a bold design accent that is apt for the present day.

The brand’s fusion of sportswear with style can be seen most vividly in the trail-runner-inspired Big Logo Trainers which would be at home on both the track and the pavement, and also in the Fabre BL-S 2.0. Based on Onitsuka Tiger’s original basketball shoe released in 1975, the reimagined Fabre has modified cushioning within that provides a more comfortable fit.

For a very strong style statement that hews closely to the brand’s Japanese heritage, the thick, grooved soles of the ladies’ Pokkuri Sneaker PF were inspired by the geta (traditional wooden sandals) worn by the elegant geishas of Gion, and the bright pop of colour is reminiscent of their vibrantly-coloured kimonos.

But, traditional influences aside, Pompilio insists that Onitsuka Tiger isn’t just a Japanese company, but a global one. “Our aesthetic, overall, is metropolitan, very international,” he says. “[Through our work], I want to break down the geographical barriers.”

With a collection that would certainly be at home either in the snowy streets of Kobe where the brand was born or in the hippest clubs anywhere in the world, Onitsuka Tiger is doing just that.
