ID Genève’s collaboration with ‘The Revenant’ actor indicates the circular economy’s evolving approach to luxury timepieces

Oscar-winning actor and vocal environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio has invested in Swiss watchmaker ID Genève, which raised CHF 2 million (US $2.2 million) in a 2023 seed funding round.

Founded in 2020, ID Genève is pioneering circular economy principles within the luxury watch industry. The brand not only crafts high-end mechanical timepieces using ethically sourced and recycled materials, it also boasts manufacturing processes with a low carbon footprint.

“I am thrilled to be an investor in ID Genève, a brand that’s driving change in the luxury industry and beyond, by consistently innovating and focusing on circular economy principles,” says DiCaprio.

ID Genève co-founder and CEO Nicolas Freudiger is similarly excited about the partnership, and says that they hope “this synergy will not only give us a louder voice in championing sustainable practices, but also inspire and challenge our peers in the luxury sector and beyond to prioritise environmental practices”.

Initially only available in Switzerland, ID Genève watches can now also be found in Watches of Switzerland stores in the UK and US, thus increasing the brand’s international reach—and DiCaprio’s backing certainly underscores the growing demand for luxury products to embrace sustainable materials and manufacturing.

Indeed, this investment enables the young company to accelerate growth after the success of its inaugural Circular 1 collection in 2021. And ID Genève’s latest offering, the Circular S collection, features watches made completely from recycled steel melted in solar furnaces, reducing carbon emissions.

Which all goes to show ... it’s time more industries embrace sustainability.
