Traditionally, buttermilk is a byproduct of traditional butter-making, which involves churning. Although real buttermilk is relatively rare nowadays (most of what we know or buy in supermarkets has been cultured in labs), it remains a staple and star ingredient in many cuisines. Plus, it's great for health-conscious people as it's high in protein, calcium, potassium, and other nutrients

Buttermilk Onion Rings

  • Vegetable oil (for frying; about 3½ cups)
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • Salt

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
